Chapter 5 - THE ORPHANAGE AND THE SECOND LIE

Vivian stepped backward.
Gabriel Kane stood in the doorway.
Older.
Calmer.
Far more dangerous than the stories suggested.
Lily looked at him curiously.
“Who are you?”
Gabriel smiled gently.
“Someone your mommy knows.”
Vivian stared.
“You're dead.”
“So I've been told.”
She looked toward the exit.
Gabriel blocked it.
“You're not taking the child.”
Vivian's voice became cold.
“You don't understand what she is.”
“She is three years old.”
“You think this is about Lily?”
“No.”
Vivian hesitated.
Gabriel continued.
“This is about Clara.”
Vivian's face changed.
“You know where she is.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Gabriel smiled.
“You've spent thirteen years searching.”
“And you've known?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because you never asked the right question.”
Vivian's anger rose.
“What question?”
“Who is protecting her?”
Vivian went silent.
Gabriel looked at Lily.
“She has been safe because people like your family underestimated ordinary women.”
Lily smiled.
“I have Mommy.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Yes.”
Vivian looked toward the child.
“Where is Nora?”
“Coming.”
“Adrian?”
“Coming.”
Vivian understood.
“You set this up.”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Gabriel looked toward the doorway.
“You did.”
Vivian's face hardened.
Before she could respond, headlights appeared outside.
Adrian entered the building with Nora, Damian, and Julian.
His eyes immediately found Lily.
“Lily.”
The child jumped down from the chair.
“Uncle Adrian!”
She ran.
Adrian caught her.
He held her tightly.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered,
“You're safe.”
Lily wrapped her arms around him.
“I wasn't scared.”
“You're braver than me.”
She giggled.
Nora rushed toward them.
Adrian handed Lily over.
Mother and daughter embraced.
Vivian stood alone.
Adrian looked at her.
“Why?”
Vivian's face hardened.
“You think I did this because I hate you?”
“I think you used a child.”
“I was trying to save my family.”
“By threatening Nora?”
Vivian's eyes filled.
“My father owes millions.”
Adrian said nothing.
“He owes people who don't forgive.”
She explained that her father had been blackmailed by the same group that had once controlled the Kane network.
They threatened to destroy her family.
Vivian had agreed to marry Adrian because her father believed marriage would give them legal access to Kane assets.
But Vivian had never intended to kill Adrian.
She had intended to control him.
Her fear had turned into cruelty.
She had convinced herself that frightened people were easier to manipulate than powerful ones.
Adrian listened.
Then said,
“You still chose to hurt Nora.”
Vivian lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
“And Lily.”
“I never intended to hurt her.”
“You put her in danger.”
“I know.”
Adrian's voice was quiet.
“That is enough.”
Damian stepped forward.
“Adrian.”
Adrian turned.
“You knew.”
Damian swallowed.
“I knew Vivian was under pressure.”
“You knew she was threatening Nora.”
“Yes.”
“You helped her.”
“I thought I could control the situation.”
Adrian stared at him.
“You threatened a mother.”
Damian looked away.
“I was wrong.”
Adrian's anger did not explode.
It became colder.
“You're finished.”
Damian nodded.
“I know.”
Then Julian spoke.
“There's still Clara.”
Everyone looked at him.
Vivian said,
“She was never at the orphanage.”
Gabriel nodded.
“I know.”
Adrian frowned.
“Then why bring us here?”
“To show us what was hidden.”
Gabriel walked toward an old wall.
He pressed a brick.
A panel opened.
Inside was a metal box.
Adrian opened it.
Documents.
Photographs.
Trust agreements.
And one letter from Vincent Kane.
Adrian read it.
It explained everything.
Clara was not Vincent's biological daughter.
She was the daughter of a woman Vincent had protected.
The shares had been placed in Clara's name because Vincent wanted to protect them from Blackthorn.
But the woman had died.
Clara had been adopted.
Her identity was sealed.
Adrian looked at Gabriel.
“Who is she now?”
Gabriel shook his head.
“We don't know.”
Nora stepped closer.
“I might.”
Everyone turned.
Nora looked at the photograph.
Then at the little girl.
She began crying.
“I've seen her.”
“When?”
“Two years ago.”
“Where?”
“At the shelter where I worked before coming here.”
Adrian stared.
“What was her name?”
Nora shook her head.
“She used another name.”
“What name?”
“Emma.”
Gabriel went still.
“Emma Hale?”
Nora nodded.
Adrian looked at her.
“That's your surname.”
Nora's eyes filled with tears.
“Because Ethan and I adopted her.”
Silence.
Adrian finally understood.
Lily was not Clara.
Nora's older adopted daughter was.
The little girl in the photograph was now living somewhere under a different name.
And Nora had unknowingly protected the heir to the Kane fortune.
Vivian stared at Nora.
“You knew?”
“No.”
Gabriel looked at Nora.
“You've been protecting Clara without knowing who she was.”
Nora looked toward Lily.
“That's what mothers do.”
Adrian's eyes softened.
Then a new problem emerged.
If Nora's adopted daughter was Clara, someone knew where she was.
Vivian's father.
Adrian turned toward Vivian.
“Where is your father?”
She looked terrified.
“I don't know.”
Damian suddenly spoke.
“I do.”
Adrian turned.
Damian reached into his pocket.
“I found this in Vivian's car.”
He handed Adrian a key.
A motel key.
Room 214.
The old Blackwater Motel.
Adrian recognized the location.
It was outside Philadelphia.
The same city where several Blackthorn survivors had disappeared years ago.
Adrian looked at Nora.
“Is Emma there?”
Nora's face went pale.
“I don't know.”
Adrian closed his fist around the key.
“We find out.”
They drove through the night.
At dawn, they reached the motel.
Room 214 was empty.
No Vivian's father.
No Emma.
Only a small suitcase.
Inside was a child's sweater.
A photograph.
And a handwritten note.
Adrian picked it up.
IF YOU WANT THE GIRL, COME TO THE PLACE WHERE ADRIAN FIRST LEARNED TO LIE.
Julian looked at him.
“Where is that?”
Adrian stared at the note.
Then his face changed.
“My father's office.”
Nora looked at him.
“But that's the estate.”
Adrian nodded.
“Exactly.”
His phone rang.
The caller ID showed no number.
Adrian answered.
A man's voice spoke.
“You finally understand.”
“Who are you?”
“You've spent your whole life believing your father lied to protect you.”
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“He didn't.”
The voice laughed.
“He lied because he was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
A pause.
Then:
“His own son.”
The call ended.
Adrian looked at Julian.
Julian's face had gone white.
Because he knew what the voice meant.
Vincent Kane had never feared Adrian.
He had feared Gabriel.
And Gabriel had feared someone else.
May you like
The third man in the family.
The one who had been controlling everything from the beginning.
