Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL

They raced back to the estate.

Adrian did not speak during the drive.

Neither did Nora.

She held Lily tightly.

Julian followed in another vehicle.

Damian stayed beside Adrian.

When they reached the estate, the guards were already searching.

Adrian stepped inside.

“Lock every exit.”

“Yes, boss.”

“Search every room.”

They split up.

Adrian went directly to the old family office.

The signal was strongest there.

Damian checked the walls.

“Something is wrong.”

“What?”

“There are two signals.”

Adrian stared.

“Two?”

“One is the video.”

“And the other?”

Damian looked toward the old bookcase.

“Moving.”

They followed it.

Behind the bookshelf was a narrow passage.

Not the old secret room.

Something newer.

Fresh wood.

Fresh screws.

Adrian opened it.

A staircase led downward.

Nora grabbed his arm.

“Emma.”

They descended.

At the bottom was a small room.

Emma sat inside.

Alive.

Shaking.

Nora ran to her.

“My baby.”

Emma cried into her arms.

“Mommy?”

“Yes.”

“I knew you'd come.”

Nora held her tightly.

Lily ran in behind them.

“Emma!”

The two girls hugged.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

For the first time in years, the Kane estate felt like a place where someone had been rescued rather than imprisoned.

Then Julian noticed something.

“There.”

A second door.

They opened it.

Inside were surveillance screens.

The entire estate.

Every hallway.

Every bedroom.

Every staff entrance.

Adrian stared.

Someone had been watching them for months.

Nora looked at the screens.

“There.”

One monitor showed Vivian.

Another showed Damian.

Another showed Adrian.

And another showed Lily sleeping.

Nora covered her mouth.

Adrian's anger returned.

Not wild.

Controlled.

Cold.

He walked to the equipment.

A recording was playing.

Marcus's voice.

“Adrian believes he controls the house.”

Another voice answered.

Vivian.

“I know.”

Adrian stared.

Vivian had been working with Marcus.

But the recording continued.

Vivian said,

“I can't keep lying to him.”

Marcus answered,

“You will.”

“I won't hurt Nora again.”

“Then I'll hurt your father.”

Vivian's voice broke.

“You promised.”

“I promised nothing.”

Adrian stopped the recording.

Vivian had been manipulated.

Still guilty.

But not the mastermind.

He looked at Nora.

“She was afraid.”

Nora nodded.

“I know.”

Adrian turned to Damian.

“Find Marcus.”

Damian examined the equipment.

“He's nearby.”

“How?”

“There's a live uplink.”

He traced it.

Then his eyes widened.

“Pier.”

Adrian knew which one.

The old Kane shipping pier.

Where his father had once built the organization.

They drove there.

Marcus was waiting.

But this time, he wasn't alone.

Vivian stood beside him.

Adrian raised his weapon.

“Move away from him.”

Vivian looked at Adrian.

“I can explain.”

“You had your chance.”

“I was protecting my father.”

“You endangered Lily.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

Vivian looked at Marcus.

“Because I finally realized he was going to kill us all.”

Marcus smiled.

“She's lying.”

Vivian turned.

“No.”

She pulled a small drive from her pocket.

“I recorded everything.”

Marcus's smile disappeared.

Vivian handed it to Adrian.

“Your father knew.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Knew what?”

“That Marcus had been manipulating Damian.”

Adrian stared.

“Vincent knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he stop him?”

Vivian's voice trembled.

“Because Marcus threatened Julian.”

Julian stepped forward.

“What?”

“Marcus had Julian's daughter.”

Everyone froze.

Julian stared at Vivian.

“My daughter?”

Vivian nodded.

“She's alive.”

Julian's face broke.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“You used his child too.”

Marcus smiled.

“Family makes excellent leverage.”

Adrian's expression changed.

He stepped forward.

“You've spent your entire life believing fear makes people obedient.”

Marcus said nothing.

Adrian continued.

“But you made one mistake.”

“What?”

“You taught us what happens when fear controls a family.”

Damian moved first.

He disarmed Marcus.

Julian tackled the second guard.

Adrian reached Vivian.

Nora stayed behind with the girls.

Within minutes, Marcus was on the ground.

The authorities arrived shortly afterward.

But before Marcus was taken away, he looked at Adrian.

“You think you've won.”

Adrian stared.

“I know I haven't.”

Marcus smiled.

“Then ask yourself why Vincent left the shares to Clara.”

Adrian's expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus laughed.

“Because Clara isn't the heir.”

He looked toward Nora.

“Lily is.”

Then Marcus was taken away.

Adrian stood frozen.

Nora looked at Lily.

Lily looked back.

Three years old.

Confused.

Holding a stuffed rabbit.

Adrian's world shifted again.

The shares.

The secret.

The adoption.

The entire reason everyone had been searching.

Lily.

Nora whispered,

“That can't be true.”

Julian shook his head.

“Marcus lies.”

But Adrian remembered the necklace.

The photograph.

The old records.

The mysterious second order.

He looked at Lily.

Then at Nora.

Maybe she had been closer to the truth than anyone knew.
