Plot twist

Chapter 6 - THE MAN BEHIND THE FAMILY NAME

They returned to the Kane estate before sunrise.

Adrian entered his father's old office.

Nothing had changed.

The same dark shelves.

The same heavy curtains.

The same desk.

The same chair where Vincent had once sat while Adrian stood before him as a teenager.

Adrian walked toward the wall.

“Where?”

Julian pointed toward the bookshelf.

“Behind the third cabinet.”

Adrian moved it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a single tape recorder.

No modern technology.

No digital files.

Just an old cassette.

Adrian inserted it.

Static filled the room.

Then Vincent's voice.

“If you're hearing this, I'm already gone.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

His father's voice sounded exactly as he remembered.

Older.

Tired.

But controlled.

“I lied to Adrian because I had no other way to protect him.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Gabriel knows the truth.”

The recording continued.

“Julian knows part of it.”

A pause.

“Damian knows almost nothing.”

Adrian looked at Damian.

Then Vincent said the words that changed everything.

“The danger does not come from outside the family.”

Adrian's eyes opened.

“It comes from someone who has been sitting beside my sons for years.”

Julian whispered,

“Who?”

The recording continued.

“His name is Marcus Cole.”

Damian froze.

Adrian turned.

Damian's face became completely empty.

“Your father was Damian's father?”

“No.”

Damian shook his head.

“Marcus is my uncle.”

Adrian stared.

Vincent explained that Marcus Cole had been one of the architects of the old Blackthorn network.

He had infiltrated the Kane organization through Damian.

He had manipulated Damian from childhood.

He had arranged the disappearance of Julian.

He had orchestrated the warehouse fire.

And he had been behind the financial pressure on Vivian's family.

The entire chain led back to one man.

Marcus.

Adrian stopped the tape.

He looked at Damian.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Not once?”

Damian shook his head.

“I knew my uncle was involved in criminal business.”

“But?”

“I didn't know he controlled Blackthorn.”

Adrian believed him.

For the first time in days, he believed Damian.

But trust had already been damaged.

Damian looked broken.

“I should have told you about Vivian.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“You weren't.”

“I know.”

Adrian nodded.

“That doesn't mean you're beyond redemption.”

Damian looked at him.

Adrian continued.

“But redemption starts with truth.”

Damian took a breath.

Then told them everything he knew.

Marcus had contacted him six months earlier.

He threatened to expose Damian's past.

He threatened to hurt people Damian loved.

He ordered Damian to frighten Nora.

He wanted Lily because he believed Nora knew where Clara was.

Damian had never intended to hurt Lily.

But fear had made him obedient.

Adrian listened.

Then asked,

“Where is Marcus now?”

Damian shook his head.

“I don't know.”

The office door opened.

Nora stood there.

She was holding the child's photograph from the motel.

“I know where he is.”

Everyone turned.

Nora placed the photograph on the desk.

“There is a place.”

“What place?”

“The shelter where Emma lived.”

Adrian frowned.

“You said she left.”

“She did.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“Where?”

Nora pointed to the photograph.

The background showed an old church.

“I remember this building.”

Julian recognized it.

“That church belongs to Marcus.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

They drove there.

The church looked abandoned.

Inside, dust covered the pews.

A child's drawing lay on the floor.

Adrian picked it up.

It showed a family.

A woman.

Two little girls.

And a tall man.

At the bottom, a child's handwriting said:

DADDY WILL COME BACK.

Nora's face collapsed.

“Emma.”

She knew immediately.

Someone had been there recently.

Adrian found fresh footprints.

They led to the back room.

Inside was a table.

A photograph of Adrian.

A photograph of Nora.

A photograph of Lily.

And one of Emma.

All four had red marks drawn across their faces.

Nora began crying.

Adrian put a hand on her shoulder.

“We're going to find her.”

A voice came from the darkness.

“You're already too late.”

Marcus stepped forward.

He was in his sixties.

Elegant.

Calm.

Almost grandfatherly.

He looked at Lily's photograph.

“She was always the leverage.”

Adrian raised his weapon.

“Where is Emma?”

Marcus smiled.

“You're finally asking the right question.”

“Where?”

“Safe.”

Nora stepped forward.

“You're lying.”

Marcus looked at her.

“No.”

“Then let me see her.”

“You will.”

“When?”

“When Adrian gives me the company.”

Adrian laughed.

“You think I'd give you Kane Holdings?”

“No.”

Marcus looked at him.

“I think you'll give me everything because you love the people in this room more than you love power.”

Adrian's eyes hardened.

Marcus smiled.

“That's your weakness.”

“No.”

Adrian lowered his weapon.

“That's what you don't understand.”

Marcus frowned.

Adrian continued.

“You think power is ownership.”

He looked at Nora.

“At some point, I learned it isn't.”

Marcus's smile disappeared.

Adrian's phone rang.

A video appeared.

Emma was sitting somewhere.

Alive.

Terrified.

Lily saw the screen.

“That's my sister.”

Nora covered her mouth.

Adrian watched the video.

Marcus said,

“Bring me the Kane shares by midnight.”

Then the video ended.

Adrian looked at him.

“You made one mistake.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

“You showed us where she is.”

Marcus smiled.

“No.”

Adrian pointed toward the screen.

“You showed us what you want us to see.”

Marcus's smile vanished.

Adrian turned toward Damian.

“Find the signal.”

Damian nodded.

He took out his phone.

Seconds later, his expression changed.

“It's not coming from here.”

“Where?”

Damian looked at Adrian.

“The Kane estate.”

Everyone froze.

Marcus had been using Adrian's own house.

May you like

Again.

And this time, he had hidden Emma somewhere inside it.
