Chapter 2 - THE TACTICAL INTERDICTION

The heavy glass doors of the Fairfax County Courthouse burst open as a team of tactical medical responders rushed down the marble steps.
The freezing November rain did nothing to cool the raging fire of betrayal burning in Nathan Reed’s chest as he held his sister's hand.
Evelyn's breathing was shallow and uneven, her pale skin contrasting sharply with the dark blue of her torn maternity dress.
"Stay with me, Evy," Nathan commanded, his voice dropping into the low, razor-sharp cadence he used to dominate federal courtrooms.
"The transport vehicle is already here, and we are going straight to the secure wing at Walter Reed."
At the top of the steps, Marissa Vale took a panicked step backward, her hand clutching her beige coat as she looked at the marshals.
"I didn't push her!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, desperate whine that completely shattered her expensive, polished facade.
"She slipped on the wet stone! Everyone saw it! It was an accident!"
"The security cameras mounted on the columns recorded every single coordinate of your hands, Marissa," Nathan said, not looking up.
"And by the time the morning market opens, your family's real estate syndicate will be completely liquidated by federal decree."
Evelyn let out a fragile, trembling sob as the responders gently stabilized her abdomen and lifted her onto the secure stretcher.
"Nathan... the ledger," she whispered, her fingers locking together with his with a sudden, final burst of strength.
"I have the files... the private transfers to the Cayman accounts."

"The books are already being read, Evy," Nathan replied, his eyes narrowing as he watched the police cordon off the steps.
"And the first account we are going to balance is theirs."
