Plot twist

Chapter 2 - THE TACTICAL EXTRACTION

The door to my private recovery room at Walter Reed closed with a heavy, pressurized click, leaving me alone with the rhythmic, mechanical heartbeat of my unborn twins echoing from the bedside monitors.

I lay perfectly still on the sterile hospital sheets, my hands resting over the high, rounded curve of my stomach where my boys shifted restlessly in response to the spike of adrenaline still flooding my veins.

Daniel had dropped the leather folder on my bedside table as if it were a weapon, completely convinced that a pregnant, isolated woman would have no choice but to sign away her life to protect his fragile pride.

He believed my long deployments overseas were nothing more than low-level administrative duties, a quiet clerical job that kept me out of the way while he built his flashy logistics empire on the backs of government contracts.

But as I reached beneath my pillow to retrieve my secure, encrypted military satellite phone, the quiet, submissive wife he thought he owned vanished into the dark.

"General Mercer," I said, my voice dropping into the low, razor-sharp cadence of an active-duty commander the moment the line secured.

"This is Colonel Evelyn Shaw; the tactical breach has officially occurred, and the target has delivered the forged transfer documents directly to my location."

"Evelyn," General Mercer's deep baritone voice boomed through the receiver, carrying the immediate, protective gravity of a man who had watched me command logistics units across three continents.

"Are you stable, and what is the status of the medical team?"

"The twins are secure under Walter Reed's specialized neonatal observation, sir, but my husband has successfully routed one hundred and fifty thousand dollars of my active-deployment funds to Vanessa Cole’s private accounts," I replied with absolute, freezing calm.

"He used my digitized military notary stamp to bypass the security filters, completely unaware that the transaction was flagged by our procurement task force the exact millisecond it was initiated."

"He has spent the last year treating my career like an inconvenient hobby, Mercer, and now he has hand-delivered the final piece of federal evidence we need to lock him away."

"The trapdoor is closed, Colonel," Mercer confirmed, the sound of keyboard strokes typing down the line with a cold, mathematical finality.

"The federal marshals have already been dispatched to freeze the primary operating accounts of Cole Logistics before the morning market opens."

"Your fifteen years of unblemished service are about to meet his sixteen months of deliberate, arrogant theft."

I hung up the phone and stared at the ceiling, my cheek still burning from the memory of the cold laughter that had echoed from Daniel’s phone when I was collapsing on the kitchen floor.

He had chosen his mistress’s family over his own children, believing his wealth made him an apex predator who could discard a wife without facing a single consequence.

But as the morning sun began to pierce the heavy curtains of my hospital room, I knew the predator was about to realize he was standing in the middle of a military crosshair.
