Chapter 4 - THE IMPERIAL CONFRONTATION

The morning sun of Friday arrived with a pale, sharp light that cast long, clean shadows across the manicured lawn of our suburban home.
The white colonial pillars of the estate stood tall against the blue sky, looking like the perfect monument to high-society success that Daniel's family loved to parade.
I stood at the edge of the concrete driveway, wearing my immaculate, decorated U.S. Army dress uniform, the gold shoulder boards and the multiple rows of service ribbons catching the bright light.
My twins, barely a week old and completely healthy after an early but safe delivery, lay sleeping side-by-side in their heavy black double stroller.
Behind me, the quiet presence of three local police cruisers and two unmarked black tactical SUVs painted the front yard in a silent, authoritative array of flashing red and blue lights.
The airport shuttle service pulled up to the curb, and Daniel stepped out of the passenger side, his face instantly twisting into a mask of pure, entitled confusion as he saw the uniform.
"Evelyn?" he barked, taking a clumsy step forward, his hand pointing toward the stroller as his mother and Vanessa stepped out behind him.
"What is this theatrical nonsense? Why are you dressed like an officer, and why are there police cars parked in my driveway?"
May you like
"I gave you seventeen years of loyalty, Daniel," I said, my voice carrying a quiet, unyielding weight that silenced the wind.
"And you chose theft."
