Chapter 2 - The Breaching of Silver Street

The sound of that muffled scream cut through the rain like a gunshot.

Julian Thorne’s confident smirk flickered, his grip tightening around the aluminum baseball bat. He tried to recover his posture, raising his chin with the casual arrogance of a young man who had never faced a real consequence in his thirty years of life.

"Get off my property, old man," Julian warned, taking half a step forward on the wet stone. "My father knows the police chief. If you take one step up these stairs, you’ll be in a cell before midnight."

I didn't answer him. I didn't yell, and I didn't argue.

Instead, I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out my secure phone, and pressed two numbers on the screen.

In the distance down Silver Street, two black SUVs that had been parked without lights suddenly ignited their high beams, tearing up the winding driveway toward the estate. Their tires screeched against the wet asphalt as they spun around behind my truck, blocking the main gates.

Four tactical officers wearing federal state-prosecution vests stepped out, weapons held at low ready, flanked by Captain Marcus Vance—my former chief investigator at the Attorney General’s Public Corruption Unit.

Arthur Thorne dropped his bourbon glass. The crystal shattered against the porch floor, amber liquor splashing across his silk slippers.

"What is the meaning of this?" Arthur shouted, his authoritative voice suddenly pitching higher into a frantic tone. "Marcus! What are you doing here with federal tactical gear? This is private property!"

Captain Vance didn't look at Arthur. He walked straight past the broken glass, his eyes fixed on Julian, who was backing up toward the heavy oak front doors.

"Arthur Thorne," Captain Vance stated flatly, pulling an emergency judicial warrant from his jacket. "We are executing an immediate search-and-rescue warrant issued under Clause 12 of the Emergency Domestic Protection Protocol, authorized twenty minutes ago by State Magistrate Vance."

Miriam Thorne gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, her perfect posture collapsing into a rigid, terrified freeze.

"You can't do this!" Julian yelled, raising the bat defensively. "She's my wife! She's emotional! She slipped on the stairs!"

I stepped past Julian as if he weren't even there. When he tried to swing the bat toward my side, Captain Vance’s lead officer grabbed the aluminum barrel mid-air, twisted Julian’s wrist until he cried out in pain, and forced him face-down onto the rain-slicked marble.

The handcuffs clicked shut with a sharp, heavy snap.

I pushed throw the grand double doors into the dark foyer of the mansion, my heart pounding in my chest as I followed the faint, terrified sound of my daughter's breathing.
