Chapter 6 - The Reckoning on the Marble Steps

By 2:00 PM, the federal marshals executed the final arrest warrants at the Thorne estate on Silver Street.

The rain had stopped, leaving behind a cold, gray sky that reflected off the wet stone pillars of the mansion.

Arthur Thorne and Miriam were led down the grand marble steps in steel handcuffs, their expensive clothing rumpled, their faces hollow as local news cameras captured every second of their public humiliation.

Julian was brought out last, wearing an orange federal inmate jumpsuit, his hands restrained at his waist, his arrogant demeanor completely shattered into sniveling panic.

A crowd of reporters shouted questions from behind the security barriers:

“Mr. Thorne! Is it true your firm laundered federal contract funds?”

“Julian! How do you respond to the felony kidnapping charges?”

I stood near the bottom of the steps, beside my truck, watching the marshals load them into the black transport vans.

Julian turned his head as he reached the rear doors of the van, his eyes catching mine through the crowd.

"Thomas... please!" Julian cried out, his voice raw with pathetic desperation. "Tell them to drop the federal charges! We can settle this privately! I'll give Audrey everything! The house, the money, the trust!"

I walked up to the side of the transport van, looking straight into the eyes of the man who had held a baseball bat against my daughter.

"My daughter doesn't need your money, Julian," I said, my voice dropping into a quiet, chilling register that made him flinch.

"She already has her life back."

"And you... are going to spend the next twenty years learning what real discipline looks like."

The marshal slammed the heavy steel doors shut, blocking his face from view forever.
