Chapter 3 - THE BROKEN SHELL

The transition from a grieving, isolated mother to a calculated, lethal adversary was completed before the first rays of morning light hit the hospital windows.
I sat in my father's private office, my eyes dry, my posture rigid as the legal documents were spread across the mahogany desk.
"The bank has officially finalized the transaction quarantine, Claire," my father's senior investigator, Martin, said.
"Garrett’s primary real estate syndicate, Vanguard Strategic, has been placed under immediate, non-negotiable administrative review."
"They have been routing smuggled logistics funds through a series of shell companies registered under Melissa’s maiden name."
"They believed that because you were focused on Ethan's treatments, you wouldn't check the corporate balance sheets," I whispered.
"They forgot that before I became a nurse, I spent four years auditing the very systems they used to hide their stolen wealth."
"The federal warrants have been fully executed," Martin confirmed, a cold, satisfied smile touching his lips.
"The regional offices of Vanguard are being locked down by the marshals as we speak."

"Let them try to clear the accounts, Martin," I said, a dangerous, crystalline focus settling behind my eyes.
"And when they realize the door is locked, we will step onto the floor."
