Plot twist

Chapter 13 - MARA RETIRED, AND I FINALLY UNDERSTOOD WHAT SHE HAD DONE FOR ME THAT NIGHT

Mara retired when Rose was eight.

The attorney general's office held a small reception.

She hated ceremonies.

I attended because making her uncomfortable was a professional obligation.

Her supervisor gave a speech.

Cases.

Convictions.

Years of service.

Then he mentioned Bellacourt.

Mara looked at me.

I looked at her.

Afterward, we stood outside.

“You called me at the wedding.”

she said.

“I remember.”

“You sounded terrified.”

“I was in labor in a locked bathroom.”

“Fair.”

I smiled.

Then:

“Why did you come yourself?”

She shrugged.

“I was nearby.”

“No.”

“What?”

“You had agents.”

“Yes.”

“Paramedics were coming.”

“Yes.”

“You still came.”

Mara looked away.

Then said:

“My sister died after her husband delayed taking her to the hospital.”

I stopped.

She had never told me.

“Pregnancy complication?”

“Postpartum.”

My chest tightened.

“He kept saying she was overreacting.”

There it was.

The same word.

“She died?”

“Yes.”

“How old were you?”

“Twenty-nine.”

I didn't know what to say.

Mara continued.

“When you said the door was closed and your mother-in-law wanted you to wait…”

She looked at me.

“I wasn't letting another woman wait.”

My eyes filled.

“Mara.”

“Don't.”

Too late.

I hugged her.

She tolerated it badly.

Then:

“You know you saved me.”

She pulled back.

“No.”

“Don't do that.”

“I opened a door.”

She said.

“You made every decision afterward.”

The words stayed with me.

Years later, when people called me courageous, I always remembered.

Rescue opens possibility.

Agency builds the life afterward.

Mara had opened the bathroom door.

I walked through every door after that.
