Plot twist

Chapter 14 - EVAN CAME HOME WHEN ROSE WAS TEN

Evan served a little over nine years.

By the time he was released, Rose was ten.

He had never held her.

Not once.

Their relationship existed through letters.

Then supervised video calls.

Slow.

Professional oversight.

He never pressured.

At least not in what we saw.

Rose wanted to meet him.

In person.

I hated the idea.

Then hated myself for hating it.

Her therapist reminded me:

“You can be frightened and still make a decision based on current evidence.”

So we arranged it.

Neutral family services center.

Security.

Counselor.

I sat outside the room at first.

Rose went in.

Then came back two minutes later.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“Come.”

“Why?”

“I want you there.”

So I entered.

Evan stood.

He had gray hair now.

That shocked me.

Nine years.

Of course.

He looked at Rose.

Then cried.

“Hi.”

Rose stared.

“You look like pictures.”

He laughed through tears.

“So do you.”

She sat.

Then:

“Did you know Grandma gave Mom medicine?”

Straight to it.

Evan closed his eyes.

“I knew she planned to give your mom something to make her sleepy.”

“That's still bad.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know it could make me be born?”

“No.”

“Mom says you knew Grandma had her doctor papers.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was a coward.”

Rose frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Evan thought.

“It means I knew something was wrong, but stopping it would have cost me things I wanted.”

“Like money?”

“Yes.”

“Like the vineyard?”

“Yes.”

“Like Grandma liking you?”

His face changed.

“Yes.”

Rose looked at me.

Then back.

“That's dumb.”

Evan laughed.

“Yes.”

Then she asked:

“Do you love me?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

He stopped.

Good question.

Children ask words adults misuse.

Evan answered:

“I love you enough now to understand loving you does not mean I get to decide what relationship you have with me.”

Rose thought.

“Okay.”

No hug that day.

Second visit, no hug.

Third—

Rose asked.

“Can I hug you?”

Evan cried before answering.

“Yes.”

I looked away.

May you like

Not because it hurt.

Because it belonged to them.
