Chapter 7 - VICTORIA TRIED TO TAKE MY BABY FROM JAIL

Rose spent eighteen days in the NICU.
Eighteen days of monitors.
Tiny diapers.
Measured milk.
Oxygen.
Weight gain.
Fear.
I sat beside her incubator reading fraud reports because apparently my brain had lost the ability to process normal novels.
Mara caught me.
“Put it down.”
“I’m on leave.”
“Exactly.”
“I’m reading recreationally.”
“It's a money-laundering flowchart.”
“Relaxing.”
She took it away.
Then my attorney arrived.
Her name was Rebecca Hart.
Family law.
Serious face.
No patience for wealthy relatives.
“We have a problem.”
“Victoria?”
“Yes.”
“She's in custody.”
“Her lawyers filed something.”
My entire body tightened.
“What?”
“A petition asserting Bellacourt family trust rights require court oversight regarding Rose's interests.”
“She's eighteen days old.”
“Yes.”
“And Victoria is charged with drugging me.”
“Yes.”
“What's the argument?”
“That your government investigation creates a conflict of interest regarding Bellacourt assets.”
I laughed.
“That is almost creative.”
“Almost.”
Then Rebecca continued.
“She's also arguing Evan retains parental rights.”
“He conspired with her.”
“Criminal charges don't automatically terminate parental rights.”
Reality.
Messy.
I hated it.
“Can they take Rose?”
“Not based on what we know.”
“Can they try?”
“Yes.”
There it was.
Legal systems require process even when fear wants certainty.
We filed.
Protective orders.
Temporary sole custody.
Medical decision authority.
Restrictions on contact.
Trust preservation.
Independent fiduciary.
Then something powerful happened.
Celeste intervened.
Not against me.
For Rose.
She voluntarily waived any claim to trustee appointment and submitted an affidavit describing Victoria's plan.
She also disclosed that Victoria had pressured her to support Evan's control.
Her testimony destroyed the image of a united Bellacourt family.
Then three extended family shareholders came forward.
They didn't know about the fraud.
They had suspected mismanagement.
They supported independent receivership.
Victoria's empire began collapsing from inside.
The court appointed a neutral fiduciary over Rose's future trust interests.
Not me.
Not Evan.
Not Victoria.
That was exactly what I wanted.
My daughter was not a weapon for either parent.
The judge granted me temporary sole physical and legal custody.
Evan could not contact Rose except through future court-approved channels.
Victoria received no contact.
I breathed for the first time in weeks.
Then the criminal investigation delivered another shock.
The Bellacourt fraud total wasn't twenty-three million.
It was sixty-four.
Sixty-four million dollars over seventeen years.
Fake agricultural vendors.
Insurance claims.
Tax manipulation.
Misappropriated grants.
Charity skimming.
Payroll fraud.
Land transfers.
Layered through vineyards, event companies, freight businesses, and trusts.
I looked at Mara.
“How did nobody catch this?”
“They kept individual pieces small.”
“Still.”
“Reputation.”
There it was.
Bellacourt.
Old family.
Donors.
Vineyard galas.
Politicians photographed beneath the chandelier.
Respectability as camouflage.
“They thought nobody would look closely.”
Mara smiled.
May you like
“They hired the wrong daughter-in-law.”
For the first time, that made me laugh.
