Chapter 2 - The $650,000 Zero

By 7:30 PM on the evening of our wedding aftermath, the house in the Guadalajara suburbs was quiet, but the air inside was thick with irritation.
Brandon sat at the kitchen island, scrolling through his phone, ignoring the mountain of crusted pots still sitting in the sink. Brenda paced the hallway, her silk wrap swishing against her knees as she complained on speakerphone to her sister.
"She’s just throwing a childish tantrum," Brenda scoffed into her phone. "She thinks she can walk out on her first day of marriage and make us run after her. Brandon told her to come back, but she blocked his number."
"Let her sit in a hotel for a night," Patrick called out from the living room, adjusting the volume on the television. "When her little phone battery runs out and her pride cools down, she’ll come crawling back to clean this kitchen."
Brandon smirked, tapping his fingers against the marble counter. "She’s probably waiting at her parents' house right now, crying into her pillow, expecting me to send flowers. I’m not calling her."
"You don't need to call her, honey," Brenda said smoothly, hanging up her phone. "We have the wedding fund. We can hire a real cleaning service tomorrow, and we’ll use a portion of that cash to start the down payment on the new SUV you wanted."
Brandon’s eyes lit up. "Right. The wedding fund."
Three days before the wedding, Brandon’s father had ostentatiously handed over a check for $450,000 in front of both families during the rehearsal dinner—a grand gesture meant to show everyone in Guadalajara how prosperous the Vance family was. My parents, overwhelmed by the generosity, had matched it by quietly adding $200,000 from their own hard-earned savings, creating a total of $650,000 meant to secure our future home.
Brandon opened his banking application on his phone.
He typed in the shared account credentials he had assumed were set up under both our names.
The screen loaded with a slow, spinning wheel.
When the dashboard finally opened, Brandon’s smile froze instantly.
ACCOUNT BALANCE: $0.00
STATUS: ACCOUNT CLOSED BY PRIMARY HOLDER
Brandon blinked, slamming his thumb against the screen to refresh the app.
Zero.
"Mom..." Brandon’s voice cracked, dropping two octaves into sheer panic. "Mom, look at this."
Brenda walked over, squinting at the screen. "What am I looking at? Refresh it, the signal in this house is always terrible."
"I refreshed it three times!" Brandon yelled, jumping out of his stool. "The account says zero! The entire six hundred and fifty thousand dollars is gone!"
May you like
Patrick rushed into the kitchen, his remote control dropping to the rug. "What do you mean gone?! That’s nearly three-quarters of a million dollars!"
"She took it!" Brandon screamed, his face turning ghost-white. "Melanie took every single cent!"
