Chapter 5 - Unmasking Brandon’s Secret Debt

By Monday morning, the news of the broken marriage and the fraudulent wedding check had swept through our social circle in Guadalajara.
Inside the glass-walled offices of Simmons & Associates, my attorney, Harold Simmons, sat across from me and my parents.
"Melanie," Harold said, sliding a thick blue binder across the table. "Our financial audit of Brandon Vance’s personal accounts is complete."
My father opened the binder, his eyebrows raising in disgust as he read the numbers.
"He didn't just have company issues, Dad," I guessed softly.
"It’s worse than that," Harold confirmed. "Brandon carries over one hundred and eighty thousand dollars in personal gambling debt across three private credit syndicates. He had pledged his 'future marital assets' as collateral two weeks before your wedding."
"Had you stayed in that house for even thirty days," Harold continued, "under state marital property laws, those creditors could have placed a legal attachment on your parents' two hundred thousand dollars."
My mother covered her mouth, tears of relief filling her eyes as she looked at my father. "Thank God you locked that account, David."
"They thought my daughter was an easy target," my father said, his voice deep and dark with protective rage. "They thought a young bride would be too embarrassed by public scandal to walk away."
The door to the consultation room opened softly, and a junior clerk stepped inside.
"Mr. Simmons," the clerk reported, "Brandon Vance and his father are in the main lobby. They brought their corporate attorney and are demanding an immediate settlement conference."
Harold looked at me, a sharp, confident smile touching his lips.
"Shall we go show them what a real settlement looks like, Melanie?" Harold asked.

I stood up, smoothing down my tailored green blazer, feeling a powerful, unshakeable strength rising inside my chest.
"Let's end this," I said.
