Chapter 3 - The Storming of Jessica’s Porch

Less than an hour later, the headlights of Brandon’s sports car cut sharply through the dark driveway outside Jessica’s two-story home.

Inside, I sat at the kitchen table, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket, drinking hot tea while Jessica reviewed a stack of bank documents with me.

"Your father is a absolute genius, Melanie," Jessica whispered, pointing to the original wire authorization form. "Look at the primary signatory line."

When Brandon’s father had handed over the $450,000 check at the rehearsal dinner, my father had noticed something subtle: the check was drawn from a corporate account requiring dual-signature authorization, but only Patrick’s signature was present. My father, experienced in commercial law, knew the check would have faced an immediate secondary hold or revocation if placed into a joint marital account.

So, with my consent before the ceremony, my parents had deposited the funds into a sole-proprietorship trust account set up exclusively under my legal maiden name, locking it behind two-factor biometric encryption.

The $450,000 check from his family hadn't even cleared yet; it was sitting in escrow pending corporate verification. The only real cash in the account was my parents' $200,000.

Before I could reply to Jessica, a heavy, violent thud rattled the front door.

"Melanie! Open this door right now!" Brandon’s voice boomed through the wood.

Jessica stood up instantly, her face setting into an iron scowl. "Don't move. I’ll handle this."

"No, Jess," I said, rising calmly from the chair, pulling the blanket around my shoulders. "I'll talk to him."

We opened the front door, keeping the heavy iron security screen locked between us.

Brandon stood on the porch, his hair disheveled, his pink shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his eyes wild with fury. Brenda and Patrick stood right behind him on the walkway, looking like two predators who had just realized their trap was empty.

"You stole our money!" Brandon shrieked, pressing his hands against the iron screen. "That six hundred and fifty thousand dollars belongs to this family! Transfer it back right now, or I’m calling the police!"

I looked at him, feeling zero fear, zero regret, and zero pain.

"I didn't steal anything, Brandon," I said, my voice completely steady. "The money was placed in my legal trust by my father. And as for your family’s four hundred and fifty thousand dollar check..."

I held up a folded piece of paper through the glass.

"Your father’s check bounced thirty minutes ago because his corporate account has three active bank liens against it."
