Chapter 2 - The 7:00 AM Alarm

The morning sun washed over the polished glass towers of Philadelphia, completely erasing the stormy darkness of the night before.

Inside the master suite of the Lawson mansion, Andrew poured himself a fresh cup of black coffee. He smoothed his tailored suit jacket, feeling a smug sense of relief as he looked around his quiet house. Brenda was still sleeping upstairs, while his mother, Margaret, sat at the dining table reading the morning papers.

Andrew felt powerful. For four years, he believed Mariana had been a dead weight—a quiet, unremarkable woman living off his hard work. Throwing her out into the cold rain had felt like trimming useless fat from his prosperous life.

At precisely 6:59 AM, Andrew set his mug down on the kitchen counter.

At 7:00 AM, his phone buzzed sharply against the quartz countertop.

The screen lit up with an incoming call from Arthur Vance, the Corporate Board Chairman of Lawson Commercial Logistics—the very man who represented the syndicate of primary investors funding Andrew's business expansion.

Andrew smiled confidently, adjusting his voice to his best executive tone before answering. "Good morning, Arthur! I was just about to review our Q4 logistics projections—"

"Andrew," Arthur’s voice came through the speaker, cold, mechanical, and devoid of its usual warmth. "Do not bother opening the Q4 files. I am calling to inform you that an emergency extraordinary board meeting has been convened for 9:00 AM."

Andrew’s smile faltered slightly. "An emergency meeting? Arthur, our numbers are solid. We just secured the regional distribution contract—"

"That contract was cancelled fifteen minutes ago," Arthur interrupted sharply. "Along with your corporate lines of credit at City National Bank. The primary equity holding company has executed a total asset recall."

Andrew felt a sudden, sharp coldness spread behind his ribs. "What primary equity holding company? I own fifty-one percent of Lawson Logistics!"

"You own fifty-one percent of the operating entity, Andrew," Arthur corrected him, his tone carrying an iron edge. "The master property deeds, the fleet leases, and the primary debt instruments are ninety percent owned by the Escalante Group."

Andrew blinked, his throat going dry. "The... Escalante Group?"

"And their Chief Executive Officer arrived at our corporate headquarters ten minutes ago," Arthur added. "She has requested your immediate presence."

"She?" Andrew stammered, his mind racing.

"Mariana Escalante," Arthur stated flatly. "Your wife."

The phone line went dead.

Andrew’s hand shook so violently that his coffee mug slipped from his grip, shattering against the marble floor, sending dark liquid pooling across his polished shoes.
