Chapter 3 - The True Identity of Escalante Global

While Andrew stood paralyzed in his kitchen, I sat inside the corner penthouse office on the top floor of the Escalante Tower in downtown Philadelphia.
I was no longer wearing the worn cardigan or holding the old leather purse my grandmother had given me.
I wore a crisp, tailored ivory power suit, my dark hair styled into a flawless, commanding twist. Beside my wide glass desk stood two senior corporate attorneys and my brother, Gabriel Escalante, who managed our European shipping division.
"The asset recall order has been fully executed across all twelve regional banks, Mariana," Gabriel reported softly, placing a leather portfolio on my desk. "Andrew’s company is officially frozen."
"Did he think I wouldn't find out about the offshore transfers, Gabriel?" I asked, sipping my morning tea, my voice calm, steady, and unshakeable.
"He assumed you were an uneducated orphan with no legal connections," Gabriel replied with a sarcastic laugh. "When you married him under a simple domestic agreement four years ago, he never bothered to look up your mother's maiden trust."
For four years, Andrew had treated my patience as ignorance.
He never knew that the "modest" charity gala where we met was actually hosted by my family’s philanthropic foundation. He never realized that the multimillion-dollar logistics contracts his company landed were direct allocations issued by my private board to test his operational capability.
He had passed the business test, but he had catastrophically failed the human one.
My private line chimed softly. My secretary's voice came through the intercom: "Miss Escalante, Mr. Andrew Lawson is in the lobby. He is demanding to see the Chairman."

I looked at the silver clock on my wall. It was 8:30 AM.
"Let him up," I commanded softly. "It's time to show him the house he actually lived in."
