Plot twist

PART 1: THE ARCHITECT OF CRUELTY

The office was suffocating.

Dante Valentino stood over Mrs. Caruso like a shadow.

"Why is Elena Mitchell’s assistance file marked closed?"

His voice was a low, dangerous rumble.

Mrs. Caruso’s hands began to tremble.

She clutched the edge of the mahogany desk.

"I... I had to prioritize, sir," she stammered.

"The budget was tight."

Dante didn’t blink.

"Tight?" he echoed.

"I see a transfer for 'floral arrangements' that costs more than the annual medical aid."

He tossed the folder onto the desk.

It landed with a sound like a gunshot.

Arya was still on her knees on the Persian rug.

Her heart was slamming against her ribs.

She saw the look on Mrs. Caruso’s face.

It was pure, unadulterated terror.

"You took the money," Dante said, his voice flat.

"You denied the treatment."

"You let a woman suffer to line your own pockets."

Mrs. Caruso tried to back away, but the door was blocked by Dante’s security detail.

"I was going to put it back!" she shrieked.

"It was just a loan!"

Dante turned his gaze to me.

He walked toward me, his movements slow and deliberate.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

He stopped in front of me and crouched down.

"Arya," he said, his eyes searching mine.

"You’ve been living in my house for three months."

"You’ve been treated like a slave."

"And I didn't know."

He reached out and gently touched my bruised, cracked hand.

"That changes today."

He stood up and looked at Mrs. Caruso again.

His expression was devoid of mercy.

"Security," he barked.

Two men stepped forward.

"Take her to the basement."

"Call the police and tell them we have an embezzlement case."

Mrs. Caruso began to wail.

"Mr. Valentino, please! Think of my service!"

"I am thinking of it," he replied coldly.

"And it’s over."

As they dragged her away, the room went silent.

I was left alone with him.

The man everyone feared.

The man who owned everything.

"Get up," he said softly.

I stood, my knees shaking.

He walked to his desk and picked up a pen.

"Your mother will have the best care available."

"I will ensure the doctors are on their way."

He looked at me, his gaze intense.

"But Arya, you are not a maid anymore."

I stared at him, confused.

"Then what am I?"

He smiled, a dark, possessive look in his eyes.

"You’re going to be my secret."

"And secrets require protection."

He pulled a small, golden key from his desk drawer.

"You’re moving into the east wing."

"You’re going to be taken care of."

"And you will never have to scrub a floor again."

The air in the room felt heavy, charged with something I couldn't understand.

I felt a surge of hope, but also a spike of fear.

"Why me?" I whispered.

He stepped closer, invading my space.

"Because you were the only one who didn't beg."

"And because," he added, his voice dropping to a whisper, "I have a debt to collect."

"What debt?"

"You’ll find out soon enough."

He walked out of the room, leaving me alone with the silence.

I looked down at the golden key in my hand.

My life had just shattered.

And I had no idea what was going to be built from the pieces.
