Plot twist

PART 2: THE GOLDEN CAGE

The east wing was not a room.

It was an empire.

Silk sheets, velvet drapes, and windows that looked out over the sprawling estate.

It was beautiful.

It was also a prison.

Every day, a stylist came to dress me.

A tutor arrived to teach me business etiquette.

I wasn't a maid, but I wasn't free.

Dante was everywhere.

He was in the scent of the air, the books in the library, the guards at the door.

He visited me every night at dinner.

We ate in silence, the clinking of silver the only sound.

He watched me, always studying me, like a predator with a prize.

"You look different," he said one evening.

I was wearing a silk gown, my hair pinned up.

I felt like an actor in a play.

"I feel like a stranger," I replied.

He stood up and walked around the table.

He stopped behind me, his hands resting on my shoulders.

"You’re becoming who you were meant to be."

"And who is that?"

"A Valentino."

The word sent a chill down my spine.

"I’m not a Valentino."

"You will be."

I looked at his reflection in the mirror.

His eyes were hungry.

Possessive.

"I want to see my mother," I said, changing the subject.

"She’s recovering," he said, his voice calm.

"The best specialists are in Philadelphia."

"I have them under 24-hour watch."

I knew what that meant.

They weren't watching her to keep her safe.

They were watching her to keep me in line.

"You’re holding her hostage," I said, my voice shaking.

"I’m holding her close," he corrected.

He leaned down and kissed my neck.

His breath was hot against my skin.

"Don't ever try to leave, Arya."

"Because I won't let you."

I felt trapped.

But I also felt something else.

I felt a strange attraction to the danger.

He was a monster, but he was my monster.

One night, I found a hidden file on his desk.

It was labeled 'The Mitchell Project'.

I opened it, my heart pounding.

It contained documents from the hospital, bank records, and...

Photos.

Photos of me.

From three years ago.

From five years ago.

He had been watching me for a long time.

He had orchestrated my hiring.

He had ensured I was in debt.

He had controlled my life before I even knew his name.

I felt a wave of nausea.

I wasn't an employee.

I was an experiment.

A game he had been playing for years.

I closed the file and heard footsteps.

Dante stood in the doorway, his eyes dark with rage.

"You shouldn't have opened that," he said.

"You’ve been planning this!" I screamed.

"Everything! The debt, the job, the hospital!"

"It was all a setup!"

He walked toward me, his expression unreadable.

"I needed you," he said.

"I needed someone who understood the value of a dollar."

"Someone who would never betray me."

"I wasn't a person to you!" I cried.

"I was a variable in an equation!"

He caught my face in his hands.

"You were the only thing that made sense."

"The rest of my life is chaos."

"You are my anchor."

I looked into his eyes and saw the truth.

He was broken.

And he was trying to fix himself with me.

"I’m not your anchor," I whispered.

"I’m your prisoner."

"Then be a happy one," he said, his voice cold.

"Because the alternative is much, much worse."

He walked out of the room, leaving me alone with the truth.

I looked at the folder on the desk.

I had the proof.

But what could I do with it?

I was in the lion’s den, and the lion was in love with me.
