PART 12: THE DEPOSITION RECORDINGS

By the following week, the rain had returned to the city, washing over the limestone steps of the federal building where the grand jury was meeting.
Inside the secure interview room, Robert sat before a panel of investigators, his voice entirely stripped of its previous boardroom authority as he reviewed a series of internal emails displayed on the projection screen. The messages had been retrieved from his private laptop by my forensic software.
To: Margaret Whitmore
From: Robert Whitmore
Subject: Revenue Adjustments
“She hasn't checked the regional payroll logs yet. I’m preparing the liability waivers now. Once she signs the corporate proxy at the dinner, the debt transfers automatically. She thinks it's just a standard family restructuring form.”
The lead prosecutor stepped forward, his voice level and sharp. "Mr. Whitmore, did your wife, Margaret, explicitly instruct you to leverage your daughter's signature to cover the default on Claire’s business lines?"
Robert looked down at the table, his lips trembling as his defense attorney tapped him on the shoulder, whispering frantically. He knew that any perjury under these conditions would carry an additional ten years without parole.
"Yes," Robert whispered, the confession scraping out of his throat like a ghost. "She told me that since Natalie was always focused on her work, she wouldn't notice the internal routing until the following fiscal year. She said... she said it was family money anyway because we were the ones who gave her her start."

In the gallery section behind the glass boundary, Claire sat with her head down, her hands tucked inside her sleeves to hide her bare wrists. She had already signed a full immunity waiver, surrendering her remaining personal vehicles and jewelry in exchange for an avoided conspiracy charge.
The puzzle was completely finished. The structure of the fraud was bare under the fluorescent lights, and there was no longer any gray area left for them to hide behind.
