PART 2: THE ANATOMY OF DECEPTION

PART 2: THE ANATOMY OF DECEPTION

The cool air of the hospital corridor felt entirely freezing as Ivan’s words settled into the space between us. I stood perfectly still, my hand resting flat over the smartphone inside my lab coat pocket, ensuring the microphone caught every syllable of his quiet panic.

"Why are you telling me this, Ivan?" I asked, my voice dropping into a professional, neutral register.

"Because I saw your badge," Ivan stammered, his eyes darting toward the name embroidered on my left lapel: Dr. Camila Salvatore. "You're his real wife. The one they've been trying to erase. Danielle told me everything. She said David’s mother, Eleanor, promised her the family’s Gold Coast mansion the second the child was born, as long as Camila signed the waiver papers."

A slow, deliberate breath expanded my lungs. "They've planned this for a long time."

"Months," Ivan admitted, wiping cold sweat from his forehead. "David doesn't know he's infertile. Danielle targeted him at his firm, played into his desperation for a legacy, and used me to get pregnant. The moment David signs over the down payment funds for the new estate to Danielle's shell account tomorrow morning, she’s taking the money and the baby, and leaving him with nothing. But I won't let her take my daughter."

"Go back inside, Ivan," I said softly, my micro-expressions smoothing out into a mask of pure steel. "Act as if we never spoke. Let the play continue."

He nodded submissively and slipped back behind the white privacy curtain.

I walked down the hallway toward the executive lounge, pulling my phone from my pocket to stop the recording. I dialed a number I hadn't used outside of corporate litigation: Marcus Bell, the city's most formidable asset-protection attorney.

"Camila," Marcus answered on the first ring. "I have the forensic documents ready for the dissolution filing. Do you want me to serve David at his firm?"

"No," I said, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering Chicago skyline. "I want you to freeze the joint property trust. Specifically the $150,000 capital line my parents advanced his firm five years ago. There is a clause for character violations and marital fraud. Trigger it."

"If I trigger that clause now, his operating accounts will lock down within sixty seconds," Marcus warned. "His firm will default on its current corporate defense case."

"Good," I whispered. "Let the ice set."
