PART 4: THE NEW ERA

PART 4: THE NEW ERA
The silence inside Room 304 was absolute, broken only by the steady, mechanical rhythm of the fetal monitor checking Ivan’s daughter's heartbeat.
David stared at the fertility report, the paper wrinkling under his tightening grip as his entire world fractured in the span of a single minute. His eyes darted from the zero count to Danielle, who had completely buried her face in her hands, sobbing silently in total defeat.
"You used me," David whispered, his voice losing all its professional venom, replaced by a hollow, sickening realization. "You targeted my family."
"She targeted your vanity, David," I said, stepping closer to the bed, my white coat pristine under the morning light. "And you were so eager to erase me that you walked right into the trap."
Eleanor collapsed heavily into the visitor's chair, her high-society elegance completely evaporating as she realized the Gold Coast legacy she had enabled was built on a lie. "Camila... please. We can talk about the house. The firm can be restructured."
"The firm is already being liquidated to repay my parents' initial capital, Eleanor," I said, my voice completely devoid of anger, carrying only a profound sense of closure. "I spent eight years protecting a man who was calculating my destruction while I was still breathing. The silence you took for weakness was simply me waiting for the right incision."
I turned to the lead nurse who had just entered the room with the discharge forms. "Patient Danielle is medically cleared for transfer to the general ward. Please update the billing department to reflect Mr. Salvatore's private accounts for all emergency costs."
I walked past David without a second glance, my heels clicking sharply against the polished linoleum floor. Marcus Bell followed close behind, closing his leather briefcase with a definitive snap.
Six months later, the St. Claire Women’s Health Infrastructure opened its new pavilion in downtown Chicago, funded entirely by the liquidated assets of the Salvatore estate.

I stood at the head of the modern boardroom overlooking the lake, wearing a perfectly tailored dark blazer, my medical badge glinting under the lights. I was no longer the quiet, compliant wife who lowered her eyes at family dinners. I was the chief administrator of my own empire.
David had believed a doctor could be easily handled, easily pressured, and easily forgotten. He forgot that the same hands trained to bring life into the world also know exactly where to draw the line. The ledger was completely balanced, the old name was erased, and the new era had finally begun.
