The hotel lobby, an expanse of polished white marble and towering glass, felt entirely too vast. Fifty pairs of eyes stared at me, frozen in various states of shock. My mother-in-law, Margaret Hale, stood just two feet away, her Chanel purse slung over her forearm, her posture immaculate. Her face was a mask of practiced disappointment, as though I had deliberately ruined her afternoon by collapsing into a three-tiered custom fondant cake.
