Chapter 4 - THE PRIVATE SUITE

The private holding suite behind the grand ballroom was an oasis of dark wood, velvet upholstery, and absolute silence, completely insulated from the thumping bass of the orchestra playing upstairs.

When the oak door clicked shut behind me, a tall man standing by the floor-to-ceiling marble fireplace turned around.

At sixty-five, Richard Mercer still possessed the imposing, sharp-edged presence of a man who had built Chicago’s shipping empire from the docks up while younger men like Dominic Vale were still learning how to balance a checkbook. Silver hair framed a face carved from granite, and his pale gray eyes held the kind of fierce intelligence that instantly made everyone else in the room feel like they were standing in a draft.

“Evelyn,” Richard said, his voice dropping into a warm, resonant baritone. He crossed the room in three strides and took both of my hands in his. “You look breathtaking. Your father would have been so proud.”

“Thank you, Richard,” I said, returning his firm grip. “And thank you for the dress. It fits as though it was tailored by someone who knew my mind.”

“I knew your father’s mind, my dear,” Richard smiled faintly, releasing my hands and gesturing toward a crystal decanter resting on a silver tray. “And you inherited every ounce of his resolve. Would you like a glass of scotch before we face the lions?”

“Water is fine,” I said, walking over to the fireplace and looking at my reflection in the gilded overmantel mirror. “Has Dominic seen the seating chart yet?”

“Not yet,” Richard chuckled, pouring himself a finger of amber liquid. “His publicist arranged for them to sit at Table One—right at the front of the ballroom, directly facing the dais. He wanted maximum visibility for his new trophy. He wanted everyone to see that Dominic Vale has officially discarded the past and stepped into his prime.”

A cold smile touched my lips. “Table One. How poetic.”

“Indeed,” Richard agreed, setting his glass down. “The Meridian Gala committee rotates the host of Table One every year based on corporate contributions. Last year, it was your father’s estate. This year, Dominic bought the placement outright for fifty thousand dollars just to prove a point to the city council.”

“He loves buying prime real estate,” I murmured, turning around to face him. “Too bad he never checked the deed to the land.”

Richard’s gray eyes flashed with sudden, dangerous amusement. “Are the federal compliance officers in position?”

“Marcus confirmed they entered through the loading dock five minutes ago,” I said, my voice steady, carrying no trace of hesitation. “The Department of Justice wire fraud division doesn't usually crash charity galas, but when the majority shareholder of the targeted corporation files an emergency asset-freezing injunction with a personal signature... they tend to make an exception.”

Richard raised his glass toward me in a silent toast. “To justice, Evelyn. And to reminding the King of the Lake that lakes have bottoms.”

Before I could answer, a sharp chime sounded from the electronic control panel near the heavy mahogany doors. The cue light flashed amber, signaling that the formal dinner service was concluding and the keynote announcements were about to begin.

Through the thick oak panels, the booming voice of the gala’s master of ceremonies echoed faintly into the suite.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are honored tonight to welcome the titans of our city’s commerce... starting with a man whose vision has shaped the modern skyline of Chicago, the CEO of Vale Holdings... Mr. Dominic Vale!”

Applause erupted from the ballroom—a roaring, rolling wave of polite enthusiasm and calculated flattery.

Richard looked down at me, his expression turning sharp and decisive.

“Shall we?” he asked, offering his arm.

May you like

I placed my hand gently over his sleeve, feeling the solid, unyielding strength of the man who had protected my father’s legacy while I played the obedient wife in Dominic’s shadow.

“Let’s go,” I whispered. “Let’s see how Dominic likes his new view.”
