Chapter 7 - THE FEDERAL SEAL

The four men in federal suits walked down the central aisle with the heavy, unhurried cadence of a tidal wave.

Every head in the grand ballroom pivoted to track their movement. The whispering didn't resume; instead, the silence deepened, turning into the breathless, suffocating quiet of a courtroom awaiting a death sentence verdict.

At Table One, Dominic stood paralyzed, his hands gripping the edge of the white linen tablecloth so tightly his knuckles were stark white. Beside him, Vanessa was hyperventilating, her manicured fingers clawing frantically at the sleeve of Dominic’s tuxedo jacket.

“Dominic... what is happening?” she sobbed, her voice cracking in the quiet room. “Who are those men? Why are they looking at us?”

Dominic didn't answer her. He couldn't. His eyes were fixed entirely on the lead federal investigator, a woman with iron-gray hair and a crisp navy suit who stopped directly in front of our table.

She didn't look at Dominic. She looked past him, her eyes locking onto me.

With formal, practiced precision, the investigator pulled a heavy leather folio from her briefcase, opened it, and presented a thick document sealed with a crimson ribbon and a federal watermark.

“Mrs. Vale,” the investigator said clearly, her voice projecting across the entire ballroom. “Pursuant to the emergency petition filed under Section 402 of the Federal Corporate Fraud and Asset Recovery Act, I am officially presenting the executed freeze order for all primary and secondary commercial accounts held under Vale Holdings and its associated shell corporations.”

She turned her gaze slowly toward Dominic.

“Mr. Dominic Vale,” she continued, her tone turning ice-cold. “You are formally served with a federal subpoena requiring your immediate appearance before the U.S. District Court tomorrow morning at 8:00 A.M., to answer charges of grand larceny, securities fraud, and systematic embezzlement of corporate trust assets.”

The words hung in the air like falling glass.

Embezzlement. Securities fraud. Grand larceny.

Vanessa let out a sharp, choked gasp and physically recoiled from Dominic as if he had suddenly caught fire. “Embezzlement? Dominic, what is she talking about?! You told me our accounts were secure! You said Vale Holdings was worth fifty million dollars!”

“Shut up, Vanessa,” Dominic snarled, his voice breaking as a cold sweat beaded across his forehead. He turned on the federal investigator, his face twisting in desperate rage. “This is a mistake! A hostile takeover maneuver! My lawyers will have this injunction thrown out before breakfast! I am the CEO of Vale Holdings! I built this company!”

“You didn't build anything, Dominic,” I said quietly.

My voice cut through his frantic shouting with the sharpness of a scalpel.

Dominic whipped his head around, staring at me with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred. “You! This is your doing! You set this up! You conniving, ungrateful—!”

“Watch your tone, Mr. Vale,” Richard Mercer warned, taking half a step forward and resting his hand inside his coat near where a concealed holster sat resting against his ribs. “You’re speaking to the majority voting shareholder of Vale Holdings.”

Dominic froze.

The courtroom silence in the ballroom seemed to drop another ten degrees.

“What... what did you say?” Dominic whispered, his voice trembling violently.

I reached down to the small clasp of my diamond pendant, unhooked it, and placed it gently on the table beside his spilled champagne glass. Then, from the small velvet clutch I carried, I pulled out a single, folded document and slid it across the white linen until it stopped right against his trembling fingers.

“You always wondered why your father-in-law left his controlling shares in an irrevocable family trust instead of handing them directly to you on our wedding day, didn't you, Dominic?” I asked softly.

Dominic looked down at the document.

The heading at the top of the page was unmistakable: EVELYN VALE — SOLE BENEFICIARY AND CONTROLLING TRUSTEE.

“You thought I was just a quiet, invisible wife,” I continued, leaning in close so only he could hear the absolute finality in every word. “You thought eight years of treating me like a servant meant you owned everything I touched. But you forgot one simple rule of Chicago business, Dominic.”

I straightened up, looking him dead in the eye.

“Never steal from the people who own the roof over your head.”
