Chapter 5 - THE GRAND BALLROOM

The double doors of the Meridian ballroom swung open, and the overwhelming sensory rush of elite Chicago society crashed over us like a physical wave.

Chandeliers the size of small cars cast a blinding, diamond-faceted glare across acres of polished parquet flooring. Hundreds of guests—men in impeccably tailored tuxedos and women draped in emeralds, rubies, and floor-length designer gowns—sat scattered across dozens of round tables draped in white imported linen.

At the very front of the room, positioned directly beneath the raised dais where the city’s mayor and civic leaders sat, was Table One.

And sitting right in the center of it, basking in the glow of the room’s collective adulation, was Dominic Vale.

He looked magnificent in his charcoal tuxedo, laughing softly at something Vanessa Quinn whispered in his ear. Vanessa leaned close, her platinum-blonde hair catching the chandelier light, wearing an expression of triumphant, unearned victory. She looked like a woman who genuinely believed she had successfully climbed to the top of the mountain.

Neither of them noticed the double doors at the rear of the ballroom opening.

Richard Mercer and I stepped over the threshold, moving with the quiet, devastating gravity of an oncoming tide.

At first, only the guests near the back noticed us. Heads turned. Whispers rippled through the peripheral tables like wind through high grass.

“Is that...?”

“No way. Not after what happened—”

“Who is she with?”

Richard didn't rush. He walked at a measured, unhurried pace, guiding me down the central red-carpeted aisle toward the front of the room. Every eye along the path began to track us. The murmurs grew louder, spreading from the back tables to the middle tier, until the ambient noise of the entire ballroom began to steadily dissolve into a tense, suffocating hush.

At Table One, Dominic finally felt the shift in the room’s atmosphere.

He was in the middle of lifting a crystal champagne flute to his lips when the silence reached his table. He frowned, lowering the glass, and turned his head lazily toward the central aisle to see what was interrupting his evening.

His eyes locked onto me.

The glass slipped from his fingers. It didn't shatter—it hit the thick linen tablecloth, spilling a pool of golden champagne across the white fabric, but Dominic didn't even blink.

His face drained of all color so fast it looked as though someone had pulled the plug on his circulatory system. His jaw slackened, his mouth parting in a silent, paralyzed gasp.

Beside him, Vanessa stopped mid-laugh, following his rigid gaze down the aisle. When her eyes landed on me—wearing a custom Milanese silk gown that cost more than her annual base salary, leaning on the arm of Richard Mercer, the most feared and respected titan in the Midwest—her triumphant smile froze and twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated confusion.

“Dominic,” Vanessa whispered, her voice carrying clearly through the surrounding silence. “Who... who is that?”

Dominic couldn't answer. He couldn't even breathe.

Because walking beside Richard Mercer wasn't the quiet, submissive wife he had casually dismissed and ordered out of his penthouse six hours ago.
