Chapter 5 - I FOUND DANIEL ALIVE, BUT HE WAS NOT THE MAN WHO HAD WALKED OUT OF OUR APARTMENT ELEVEN MONTHS EARLIER

Northlake Recovery Center looked peaceful.
That was the first thing I hated.
Pine trees.
Low stone buildings.
Soft lights.
A sign promising:
PRIVACY. DIGNITY. RECOVERY.
My husband had apparently been imprisoned beneath those words.
Federal agents entered first.
Not Luca’s men.
That was the deal.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Monroe arrived herself.
Forty-two.
Red hair.
No patience.
She looked at Luca once and said:
“If one of your people crosses the perimeter with a weapon, I charge everyone I can reach.”
Luca answered:
“Good evening to you too.”
I almost laughed.
Then remembered why we were there.
The operation lasted eighteen minutes.
Those eighteen minutes felt like my entire life.
Two Northlake employees were detained.
One armed man attempted to leave through service road.
Another surrendered.
Vincent was not there.
Neither was Brennan.
Room 208 remained locked from outside.
Rachel stopped me before hallway.
“Wait.”
“No.”
“Anna.”
“I waited eleven months.”
She looked at me.
Then:
“Thirty seconds.”
I hated her.
Waited.
An agent opened.
I stepped inside.
Daniel was sitting beside a window.
For one second, I did not recognize him.
He had lost weight.
A lot.
His dark hair had gray at the temples.
A scar crossed left eyebrow.
His right hand rested strangely against thigh.
Two fingers trembled.
He wore sweatpants and a plain white T-shirt.
Then he looked at me.
Everything stopped.
“Anna?”
My knees gave out.
Daniel stood too fast.
Nearly fell.
I crossed room before anyone could stop me.
We collided.
Not romantic.
Not graceful.
I hit his chest.
Hard.
Then again.
“You’re alive.”
“I know.”
“You’re alive.”
“I’m sorry.”
I hit him again.
Then wrapped arms around him and sobbed.
Daniel held me.
His body shook harder than mine.
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re alive.”
“I tried.”
“Eleven months.”
“I know.”
“Our daughter is seven months old.”
“I know.”
That made me pull away.
“You know.”
Tears covered his face.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Brennan.”
I wanted to kill that detective.
Daniel reached toward my face, then stopped.
As if unsure he was allowed.
That broke me more than touching would have.
I took his hand.
His wedding ring remained.
Loose.
Scratched.
There.
“You kept it.”
He looked down.
“Of course.”
I laughed through tears.
Then anger returned.
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
Daniel closed eyes.
“Because every time I tried, somebody got hurt.”
He sat slowly.
I stayed standing.
I needed distance.
“The safehouse was attacked.”
“I remember pieces.”
“Brennan pulled me out.”
“What?”
“He was there.”
My stomach tightened.
Daniel explained.
Brennan had initially sold Vincent information.
He gave up safehouse location.
But when attack became execution rather than intimidation, Brennan panicked.
He found Daniel alive.
Shot in shoulder.
Head injury.
Took him to an off-book clinic.
At first, to hide his own involvement.
Then Vincent discovered.
Daniel became leverage.
“Why keep you?”
“The files.”
“What files?”
“The complete archive.”
“Vincent knew I had a dead-man release.”
“If I disappeared permanently, certain records would go to multiple places.”
“Then why not release?”
“Because one destination was compromised.”
“Brennan.”
“Yes.”
“I couldn’t tell which.”
“So I disabled release.”
“And trapped yourself.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Yes.”
Then:
“I tried to get a message out after two months.”
“Rockford.”
I froze.
“The pharmacy.”
He nodded.
“I escaped for three days.”
“You could have called me.”
“I did.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“Your number went to disconnected message.”
I remembered.
I changed carriers when I couldn’t pay bill.
Oh God.
“I tried apartment.”
“Neighbor said you’d moved.”
“Because we were evicted.”
Daniel closed eyes.
Pain crossed his face.
“I went to your sister’s old address.”
“I don’t have a sister.”
“What?”
I froze.
He stared.
“Brennan gave me an address.”
Of course.
Manipulation.
“Then they found me.”
“Vincent’s people?”
“Yes.”
“They brought me back.”
His right hand trembled more.
“What did they do?”
His eyes moved away.
I knew enough not to press.
Not then.
He had scars I hadn’t seen.
Nightmares I couldn’t imagine.
This wasn’t reunion that erased damage.
He looked at me.
“Ellie.”
I took out phone.
My hands shook.
Hundreds of pictures.
Birth.
First bath.
Sleeping.
Smiling.
Yellow rattle.
Daniel started crying before I reached third.
“That’s her?”
“Yes.”
“She looks like you.”
“She has your ears.”
He laughed.
A broken sound.
“I saw one picture.”
“Brennan.”
“Yes.”
“He told me she was healthy.”
“I didn’t know whether to believe.”
I sat beside him.
“Do you want to meet her?”
His face collapsed.
“More than anything.”
Then fear.
“What if she cries?”
“She’s seven months old.”
“She cries at spoons.”
Daniel laughed.
God.
That laugh.
Almost old Daniel.
Then Luca appeared at doorway.
Daniel’s entire body went rigid.
“Moretti.”
Luca did not enter.
“You’re alive.”
“Apparently.”
“Did you know Vincent was—”
“Stop.”
I stood.
Both men looked.
“Not tonight.”
Luca nodded immediately.
Daniel looked surprised.
Good.
I had enough men deciding timelines.
Rachel entered next.
“Mr. Carter, we need medical assessment and statement.”
Daniel stared.
“Where’s Vincent?”
“Missing.”
His jaw tightened.
“Then Anna and Ellie are not safe.”
Luca said:
“They will be.”
I turned.
“No.”
He stopped.
“I appreciate what you did.”
“But you do not decide where we go.”
Luca’s mouth closed.
Daniel looked between us.
“What happened while I was gone?”
“Too much.”
Rachel said:
“We can place all three of you under federal protection temporarily.”
I looked at Daniel.
He looked at me.
For first time in eleven months, we made a decision together.
“Yes.”
That night, Ellie was brought to a secure family medical wing after Daniel was cleared.
Mrs. Alvarez came with her because Ellie knew her.
I stood outside room.
Daniel sat on couch.
He looked terrified.
More frightened than when federal agents asked about Vincent.
I carried Ellie in.
She stared at Daniel.
He started crying immediately.
“Hi.”
His voice broke.
Ellie stared.
Then looked at me.
Then back at him.
Daniel held out one finger.
She grabbed it.
That was all.
He covered face with free hand.
I cried too.
“Hi, Ellie Bean.”
Her eyes widened slightly at the sound.
Daniel laughed through tears.
“I’m your dad.”
She pulled his finger into her mouth.
I laughed.
“So much for emotional recognition.”
He smiled.
Then looked toward me.
“Can I hold her?”
My chest tightened.
“Yes.”
I placed our daughter in her father’s arms.
Daniel held her awkwardly.
Carefully.
As though she was something holy.
Ellie stared at his face.
Then reached up.
Touched the scar above his eyebrow.
Daniel closed eyes.
I stood beside them.
Not reunited marriage.
Not yet.
But a family in one room.
For first time since Daniel walked out of our apartment, all three of us were breathing the same air.
Then Daniel looked at Ellie’s neck.
Empty.
His expression changed.
“The necklace.”
I had it.
Luca returned it to me.
I pulled Saint Christopher chain from pocket.
Daniel stared.
“You found Luca.”
“No.”
I looked toward my daughter.
“Ellie did.”
He laughed softly.
“Of course she did.”
I fastened necklace around Daniel’s neck again.
His hand covered mine.
Then:
“Anna.”
“Yes?”
“There’s something else.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“Vincent wasn’t only trying to steal from Luca.”
“What was he doing?”
Daniel looked toward Ellie.
Then back.
“He was planning to kill him.”
May you like
My blood chilled.
“And the plan is still active.”
