Plot twist

Chapter 6 - DANIEL’S EVIDENCE PROVED VINCENT WANTED LUCA DEAD BEFORE HE COULD CLEAN UP THE EMPIRE

Daniel’s complete archive existed inside an encrypted cloud system under three separate keys.

He held one.

A trusted outside attorney in Denver held another without knowing its purpose.

The third was hidden inside a piece of code Halcyon Systems had deployed into Moretti Holdings.

Vincent had spent eleven months trying to force Daniel to reconstruct access.

He never succeeded.

Now Daniel sat inside a federal conference room with a borrowed laptop and unlocked it in fourteen minutes.

Rachel Monroe stared.

“You could have done this earlier?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Not while men outside my room controlled every network connection.”

Fair.

I sat beside him.

Not touching.

Ellie slept in adjoining room under federal protection.

Luca stood across.

Nico near wall.

No one trusted anyone completely.

Healthy, apparently.

The archive opened.

Vincent Russo had been stealing from Moretti Holdings for at least seven years.

Not simply money.

Power.

He built shell companies that controlled vendors.

Private security subcontractors.

Data access.

City inspectors.

Nightclub suppliers.

He created a parallel structure that appeared to answer to Luca while actually answering to him.

Luca stared at records without expression.

Daniel said:

“You centralized too much.”

Luca’s eyes lifted.

Anna the housekeeper had once been scared to speak to Luca.

Daniel the systems analyst apparently had no survival instinct.

“You’re alive five minutes and criticizing management?”

Daniel replied:

“I’ve had eleven months to prepare.”

Rachel almost smiled.

Then Daniel opened another folder.

PROJECT CROWN.

Luca’s expression changed.

“What is that?”

“Your assassination.”

Silence.

I hugged myself.

Daniel explained.

Vincent planned to kill Luca during annual Moretti Foundation winter gala.

Not with a dramatic public shooting.

A medical event.

Luca had a mild heart arrhythmia documented privately.

Vincent acquired access to health records through a compromised concierge clinic.

He planned to introduce a substance? We need not detail. Keep high-level: manipulate medication and stage cardiac death. Good.

“Enough to make death look natural.”

Daniel said.

Luca’s face went cold.

“When?”

“The gala is in six weeks.”

Nico cursed.

Daniel continued:

“After your death, Vincent planned to present emergency governance documents showing your incapacitation contingencies.”

“Your legitimate companies would go to interim executive committee.”

“Which he controls.”

“Illegal operations?”

“He’d absorb them.”

Luca stared.

“And if I canceled gala?”

“He adjusts.”

“This wasn’t event-dependent.”

“He needed you isolated and a credible death.”

Rachel asked:

“Why wait eleven months?”

Daniel looked at Luca.

“Because Vincent needed Daniel’s archive neutralized.”

Luca finished.

Daniel nodded.

“He knew if I died and files went out, his takeover collapsed.”

“So I kept you alive by existing.”

Luca said.

“Basically.”

A strange thing passed between them.

Enemies?

Not.

Two men whose survival had accidentally become connected.

Then Daniel showed why Vincent had placed Ellie outside Luca’s office.

He had accessed employee file.

Saw Anna.

Saw Ellie.

He suspected Daniel had hidden physical key with family.

He wanted Luca to discover child, connect necklace, open old questions.

“Why trigger this now?”

I asked.

Daniel stared at screen.

“Because he’s desperate.”

“Something changed.”

Rachel said:

“Brennan.”

Daniel nodded.

“Brennan was trying to cut deal.”

“Vincent knew.”

“He needed everyone moving so he could identify what we found.”

Luca said:

“Ellie was bait.”

My body went cold.

The idea that someone used my baby as a lever made me shake.

Luca noticed.

His expression changed dangerously.

I said:

“Don’t.”

He looked at me.

“If you go kill Vincent, he wins.”

Daniel looked toward me.

“So you’ve been giving him advice too?”

“Apparently.”

“Terrifying.”

For one second, we laughed.

Small.

Needed.

Then Rachel slammed folder closed.

“Here’s what happens.”

“Federal task force takes Vincent.”

Luca raised eyebrow.

Rachel continued:

“Your people stand down.”

“Your legitimate businesses cooperate.”

“We secure gala.”

“We arrest anyone tied to documents.”

“And Moretti…”

“Yes?”

“If I find you tipped anyone, I will personally make your next decade miserable.”

Luca almost smiled.

“Rachel.”

“What?”

“You’ve been trying for eight years.”

“Don’t flirt with prosecutor.”

Nico muttered.

I stared.

What kind of world had I entered?

Then Daniel whispered:

“Anna.”

I turned.

His face looked gray.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He pushed chair.

His right hand trembling badly.

Medical team had warned.

Head trauma.

Stress.

He had been kept on sedatives at Northlake.

Withdrawal controlled but exhausting.

I reached.

Stopped.

“Can I?”

He nodded.

I held his hand.

His fingers were colder than I remembered.

Later, in private room, Daniel said:

“You don’t have to take me back.”

I stared.

“What?”

“As husband.”

My chest tightened.

“I know.”

“I made choices without you.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“You were.”

“And controlling my life.”

“Yes.”

He looked down.

“I missed Ellie being born.”

My anger cracked into grief.

“You missed everything.”

“I know.”

“I sold my ring.”

He looked up.

“What?”

“To pay rent.”

Pain crossed his face.

“I’m sorry.”

“I ate crackers for dinner while pregnant.”

“Anna.”

“I labored with a nurse holding my hand because I had nobody else.”

He cried.

I kept going.

Not to punish.

Because truth needed room.

“I thought maybe you had another woman.”

“No.”

“I thought maybe you ran.”

“Never.”

“I thought maybe you were in lake.”

He covered face.

I let silence sit.

Then:

“You don’t get to come home and have us go back to before.”

“I know.”

“Before is gone.”

“I know.”

“We can build something else.”

His eyes lifted.

“Maybe.”

“Maybe.”

That was all.

He nodded.

Enough.

Across town, Luca returned to Moretti Tower with federal surveillance quietly layered over his own building.

Vincent still missing.

Gala still scheduled.

The public knew nothing.

Then at 10:44 that night, Daniel received an email.

From his old Halcyon account.

Subject:

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.

Attached image showed Luca entering Moretti Tower twenty minutes earlier.

Crosshairs drawn over his chest.

And beneath:

ANNA GETS ONE CHANCE TO TRADE THE LAST KEY.

Daniel looked at me.

My stomach dropped.

“What last key?”

He said nothing.

“Daniel.”

His face changed.

“Because I lied.”

My blood went cold.

“About what?”

“The archive.”

“I didn’t need three keys.”

“There are four.”

I stared.

“Where is the fourth?”

Daniel looked toward room where Ellie slept.

May you like

Then whispered:

“I hid it in the yellow rattle I bought for our daughter before I disappeared.”
