Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE YELLOW RATTLE I HAD PACKED THAT MORNING WAS WORTH MORE TO VINCENT THAN MY LIFE

I started laughing.

Not because anything was funny.

Because sometimes the human body reaches a point where crying feels repetitive.

“The rattle.”

Daniel looked guilty.

“The yellow one?”

“Yes.”

“The rattle Ellie refuses to sleep without?”

“Yes.”

“The one I carried into Moretti Tower because I couldn’t afford to replace it when she threw it under a bus last month?”

Daniel blinked.

“What?”

“Never mind.”

I stood.

“You hid evidence in a baby toy.”

“Before she was born.”

“You thought that made it better?”

“It was still in packaging.”

“Daniel.”

“I needed something nobody connected to work.”

“And if I threw it away?”

“I thought you’d keep it.”

“How arrogant.”

“Yes.”

Good.

At least he knew.

The rattle was not with Ellie.

I had left it in Storage 14B.

My blood froze.

“I packed it.”

Daniel’s face drained.

Luca was called.

He said:

“No one goes near the storage room until federal team checks.”

I wanted to scream.

“That toy belongs to my daughter.”

“And someone threatened you for it.”

he said.

“Exactly why we do not improvise.”

I hated when mafia boss made sense.

Rachel’s team entered Moretti Tower after hours under cover of tax-audit records request.

Storage 14B had been searched.

The diaper bag moved.

Blanket unfolded.

Boxes disturbed.

The rattle was gone.

I sat in federal office staring at photo of empty floor.

Vincent had it.

Daniel looked devastated.

“The fourth key doesn’t open archive by itself.”

“What does it do?”

“It authenticates original ledger.”

“Without it?”

“Defense can claim files were modified.”

Rachel said:

“It still matters.”

“But chain becomes harder.”

“Vincent knows that.”

Daniel nodded.

“If he destroys token, his lawyers get room.”

Luca asked:

“Can he use it to open anything else?”

Daniel hesitated.

“No.”

I stared.

He scratched eyebrow.

Old tell.

“What?”

“Daniel.”

“It contains a one-time recovery code.”

“For what?”

He closed eyes.

“Financial escrow.”

Luca became still.

“How much?”

“Vincent’s offshore reserve.”

Silence.

“You found it?”

“Yes.”

“Why not tell me?”

“Because I didn’t trust you.”

Fair.

“How much?”

“Thirty-one million.”

I almost laughed.

My daughter’s ten-dollar plastic rattle contained access material to thirty-one million dollars.

Of course it did.

Rachel said:

“Vincent won’t destroy it.”

“Not yet.”

“He wants money.”

Luca looked toward Daniel.

“Can he take it?”

“Only if he gets second factor.”

“What?”

“My biometric confirmation.”

My stomach dropped.

“He needs Daniel.”

“Yes.”

Then the email made sense.

Anna gets one chance.

Not because I had key.

Because I was leverage.

Vincent wanted me to bring Daniel.

Rachel refused any controlled meeting involving me.

I refused her refusal.

“No.”

“You have infant.”

“I know.”

“You are civilian.”

“I know.”

“You were not trained—”

“I am the person Vincent contacted.”

“He expects me.”

Rachel looked at Luca.

“Do not encourage.”

Luca lifted hands slightly.

“I enjoy living.”

Good.

Daniel said:

“Anna doesn’t go.”

I turned.

“No.”

“Anna.”

“You do not get to do this again.”

His face fell.

“I’m not deciding for you.”

“You just did.”

“I’m terrified.”

“Then say that.”

He breathed.

“I’m terrified.”

Good.

“So am I.”

We compromised.

I would participate only in controlled video from secure location.

No physical meeting.

Daniel too.

Federal agents would trace.

Vincent wanted negotiation.

We gave it.

At midnight, laptop lit.

Vincent Russo appeared.

I had seen him in Tower.

Perfect suits.

Silver tie.

Kind smile for employees.

Now he was unshaven in a dark room.

“Anna.”

I stared.

“You knew my husband was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You approved my job.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To see what you had.”

“I had overdue bills.”

He smiled.

“Yes.”

“You were disappointingly poor.”

Luca stood off-camera.

I saw his jaw tighten.

Vincent continued:

“Then you brought baby to work.”

“I didn’t plan that.”

“No.”

“Your desperation did.”

I hated him.

“How did you know about rattle?”

“Daniel told Brennan years ago one backup was with his daughter.”

Daniel whispered:

“I said future daughter.”

Vincent laughed.

“Men say too much when they think police protect them.”

Then he held up yellow rattle.

My hands clenched.

Ellie’s tooth marks along handle.

Tiny sticker I had placed over crack.

“Give it back.”

He smiled.

“Sentimental.”

“It’s my baby’s.”

“It’s worth thirty-one million.”

“No.”

Daniel said.

“It isn’t.”

Vincent’s eyes shifted.

“Daniel.”

“You look awful.”

“Prison chic.”

“Give Anna rattle.”

“Give me authentication.”

“No.”

Vincent sighed.

Then:

“Fine.”

He turned camera.

Detective Brennan sat tied to chair.

Blood at mouth.

I gasped.

Vincent said:

“Michael wanted redemption.”

“Now he wants medical care.”

Brennan looked at camera.

“Don’t.”

Vincent struck him? Better not detail. He grabbed shoulder.

“Second factor.”

Daniel’s face went cold.

“No.”

“You’d let him die?”

Brennan said:

“Yes.”

Everybody froze.

Brennan looked at Daniel.

“Don’t give it.”

Then toward me.

“I’m sorry.”

“For kitchen.”

“For lying.”

“Everything.”

Vincent cursed and moved camera away.

Rachel’s technicians traced fragments.

Warehouse district.

Multiple possibilities.

Luca’s knowledge narrowed.

He whispered to Rachel:

“South River cold-storage corridor.”

“There are only four buildings with that ceiling structure.”

Vincent heard something.

“Who’s there?”

I answered quickly.

“Me.”

He stared.

Then smiled.

“Luca.”

Damn.

“You always did like damaged things.”

Luca stepped into frame.

“Careful, Vincent.”

Old menace.

Vincent smiled.

“There he is.”

“Stone-cold prince.”

Luca’s face did not move.

“You used a baby.”

“You’ve used worse.”

Silence.

That landed.

Luca did not deny.

“No argument?”

Vincent asked.

“No.”

That surprised him.

Luca continued:

“I’ve done things I won’t defend.”

“You did this.”

“And you’ll answer for it.”

Vincent laughed.

“To who?”

“You?”

“No.”

Luca looked toward Rachel off-screen.

“People with paperwork.”

Even I laughed.

Vincent’s smile vanished.

The feed cut.

Rachel yelled:

“Move.”

Agents left.

Luca stayed.

I stared.

“You’re not going?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Rachel told me not to.”

I blinked.

“You listen now?”

“Occasionally.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Forty-three minutes later, call.

Brennan recovered alive.

Vincent gone.

Yellow rattle gone.

But agents found blood trail and burned documents.

He was narrowing.

Luca’s men—legally, under direction? We should avoid paramilitary. He provided property records.

One clue:

Vincent had used a Moretti-owned hotel suite under false booking two days earlier.

Nico found security image.

Vincent entered with suitcase.

He did not leave with it.

Federal warrant.

Inside suitcase:

Passports.

Cash.

And one envelope addressed:

LUCA — AFTER YOU’RE DEAD

Luca opened with Rachel present.

Inside were draft documents transferring control of several Moretti companies to emergency committee.

A medical letter declaring Luca incapacitated.

And a guest list from winter gala.

Three names circled.

Luca.

Nico.

Rachel Monroe.

Vincent did not only want empire.

He wanted to remove everyone capable of proving how he built it.

The gala was five days away.

Rachel said:

“We cancel.”

Luca looked at guest list.

“No.”

Everyone stared.

He continued:

“We change it.”

“Public cancellation tells him we know full plan.”

“A controlled event gives us chance to draw him out.”

Rachel narrowed eyes.

“You volunteering as bait?”

“Yes.”

Daniel said:

“Absolutely not.”

Luca looked.

“My event.”

“My problem.”

I stared at mafia boss who had once held my baby while sleeping.

Then at my husband.

Men.

Always trying to become sacrifice before asking whether anyone needed one.

I said:

“Or maybe nobody has to die to prove they’re brave.”

The room went silent.

Luca looked at me.

Then slowly:

“Fair.”

The gala was canceled.

No bait.

No heroics.

May you like

Vincent would have to make next move.

And for the first time, none of the powerful men in the room gave him one.
