Plot twist

Chapter 3 - THE DEAD MAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

Marcus Kane looked like a man who had been running for years.

Not physically.

Internally.

He was forty, maybe forty-two.

Thin beneath a battered winter coat.

Dark beard streaked with gray.

One cheek carried the faded edge of an old scar.

He stood inside Adrian’s secondary security room with his hands visible and his eyes fixed on the door.

Dominic had searched him twice.

No weapons.

No recording equipment.

No identification except an expired Illinois driver’s license.

Marcus Kane.

Former address in Cicero.

Adrian entered.

Marcus looked at him.

“So you’re Moretti.”

“You came to my gate.”

“Yes.”

“That usually means you already know who I am.”

Marcus gave a humorless smile.

“I know enough.”

Adrian placed the photograph on the table between them.

Elena stood in it.

Younger.

Hair longer.

Laughing.

One hand rested against the chest of a man beside her.

Tall.

Brown-haired.

A wedding band visible.

Daniel Carter.

Adrian assumed.

In the background stood a brick warehouse with a faded sign.

VESCARI IMPORTS.

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

Luca Vescari.

A name he had hated since childhood.

The Vescari family controlled gambling, trucking, and port theft through half of New Jersey before Adrian dismantled much of their New York influence.

Luca Vescari was sixty now.

Rich.

Quiet.

Dangerous enough to survive because he rarely touched anything himself.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Who is the man?”

“Daniel Carter.”

“Elena’s husband?”

“Yes.”

“Dead?”

Marcus hesitated.

“That depends what date you ask about.”

Adrian stared.

“Explain.”

“The official date?”

Marcus tapped the photograph.

“Three years ago.”

“Car crash outside Cleveland.”

“Elena was told he died immediately.”

“And?”

Marcus looked at the picture.

“This photograph was taken four days after the crash.”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“Then he survived.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Eleven days.”

The room became colder.

“Who told Elena?”

“Nobody.”

“You?”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I was trying not to die too.”

Adrian leaned back.

“Start from the beginning.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“That could take hours.”

“I have them.”

The door opened.

Elena stood there.

Adrian immediately turned.

She had left Mia upstairs with Odette and two guards.

He had told security not to let her down.

Apparently she had found someone willing to disregard him.

Judging by Dominic’s expression, that someone was Elena herself.

Her eyes landed on Marcus.

Everything inside her stopped.

“Marcus?”

His face broke.

“Elena.”

She crossed the room.

Then slapped him.

Hard.

Dominic looked impressed.

Adrian said nothing.

Marcus did not defend himself.

Elena hit his chest with both hands.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“You’re alive?”

“I’m sorry.”

“You let me think everyone was dead!”

Her voice cracked.

“You let me bury Daniel with an empty coffin!”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

Empty coffin.

Marcus swallowed.

“I had no choice.”

“There is always a choice!”

She hit him again.

Then suddenly she was crying.

Marcus tried to touch her.

She stepped back.

“Don’t.”

He froze.

Adrian understood that boundary.

“Elena.”

She looked at him.

Her face was wet.

“What did he tell you?”

“Not enough.”

She turned toward Marcus.

“Then tell him.”

Marcus sat.

Elena remained standing.

Adrian offered the chair beside him.

She ignored it.

Fair.

Marcus began.

Daniel Carter had been a forensic accountant.

Not glamorous.

Not dangerous.

At least Elena believed that.

He worked for a logistics company in Chicago that was later purchased by Vescari Imports.

After the acquisition, Daniel found money moving through vendor accounts that did not match actual shipments.

Cash disappeared.

Invoices doubled.

Warehouses billed for goods that never existed.

At first he believed it was tax fraud.

Then he found names.

Police officers.

Port officials.

Union representatives.

Judges.

And one man inside Adrian Moretti’s organization.

Adrian went still.

“Who?”

Marcus shook his head.

“That comes later.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“It comes now.”

“I don’t know.”

“You said Daniel found a name.”

“He encrypted the records.”

“I never saw everything.”

Adrian stared.

Marcus continued quickly.

“Daniel knew Vescari would kill him if he simply walked away.”

“So he contacted you.”

“Yes.”

“What were you?”

“Chicago police intelligence.”

Dominic’s expression sharpened.

“Were?”

Marcus smiled without humor.

“I stopped being useful after Daniel disappeared.”

Elena stared.

“You were police?”

“Yes.”

She laughed in disbelief.

“Daniel told me you sold insurance.”

“He lied to protect you.”

“That did not protect me.”

“No.”

Marcus accepted it.

“He made me promise you would never know unless something happened.”

“Something happened.”

“Yes.”

“Then you disappeared too.”

Marcus looked down.

“Because my lieutenant was on Vescari’s payroll.”

Adrian glanced at Dominic.

More corruption.

Always corruption.

Marcus continued.

Daniel agreed to become a confidential source.

He copied records over several months.

Then someone noticed.

The car crash was staged.

Daniel was pulled from the wreck before police arrived.

Elena was told the body had burned too badly for viewing.

She had been seven months pregnant with Mia.

Elena slowly sat.

Adrian watched the color leave her face.

“I begged them to let me see him.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“They said there was nothing left.”

“I know.”

She whispered:

“There was.”

“Yes.”

Her hand covered her mouth.

Adrian felt anger rise.

Not his grief.

Not his husband.

Still anger.

Daniel had been alive while Elena believed she had become a widow.

“What happened during the eleven days?”

Adrian asked.

Marcus looked at him.

“Vescari wanted Daniel’s copies.”

“Daniel refused.”

“He had already moved them.”

“Where?”

Marcus looked toward Elena.

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“You do.”

Her expression changed.

“No.”

“Daniel left something with you.”

“He left plenty of things.”

Marcus reached into his coat slowly.

Dominic’s hand moved beneath his jacket.

Marcus produced another photograph.

Mia as a newborn.

Wrapped in a hospital blanket.

Elena stared.

“I’ve never seen that.”

“I took it.”

Marcus said.

“Through the nursery glass.”

Her face twisted.

“You were there?”

“I was watching.”

“Why didn’t you come inside?”

“Because the man who killed Daniel had someone watching your room too.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

Marcus turned the photograph over.

Writing covered the back.

Daniel’s handwriting.

Elena recognized it instantly.

Her breath stopped.

For our little bear.

Keep her safe.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Little bear?”

Marcus’s eyes moved upward.

Toward the second floor.

“Mia’s teddy.”

Elena stood abruptly.

“No.”

Adrian did too.

“What?”

“Daniel bought Mr. Buttons.”

Her voice shook.

“He gave it to me the week before the crash.”

Marcus nodded.

“He told me if anything happened, the bear mattered.”

Elena’s face went white.

Adrian was already moving toward the door.

They reached the family suite in less than a minute.

Mia sat on the floor with Odette.

Drawing.

Mr. Buttons lay beside her.

Adrian stopped.

The battered brown bear.

Scratched eye.

Left ear sewn on twice.

Mia smiled.

“Mr. Adrian.”

Adrian crouched.

“Little one.”

She frowned.

“You look scary.”

“Apparently.”

Elena entered.

Mia immediately noticed her tears.

“Mommy?”

Elena knelt.

“I’m okay.”

Mia stared.

“Mommy says that when she’s not okay.”

Of course.

Adrian looked at the teddy bear.

“Can I see Mr. Buttons?”

Mia immediately grabbed it.

“Why?”

“A grown-up reason.”

“No.”

Adrian blinked.

Dominic turned away to hide a smile.

Marcus remained at the door.

Mia noticed him.

“Who’s that?”

Elena’s face tightened.

“An old friend.”

Marcus looked close to crying.

Mia hugged the bear.

Adrian tried again.

“I need to check something inside Mr. Buttons.”

Her eyes widened.

“No cutting.”

“I won’t hurt him.”

“You don’t know.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“How do I negotiate with this?”

“You don’t.”

Elena whispered.

“You ask.”

Adrian inhaled.

Then looked at Mia.

“May I borrow him?”

She studied his face.

“Why?”

Adrian could have lied.

He didn’t.

“Because your daddy may have hidden something inside that could help us understand what happened to him.”

Mia went still.

Elena closed her eyes.

The word daddy was complicated.

Mia knew Daniel from photographs.

Stories.

A man in heaven.

A father she had never met.

She looked at Elena.

“Daddy put something in Mr. Buttons?”

“Maybe.”

Mia looked down.

Then kissed the bear’s head.

“You bring him back.”

“I promise.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You promised Mommy sorry.”

“I remember.”

“And you did it.”

“Yes.”

Mia slowly held out the teddy bear.

Trust.

Again.

Adrian took it like something fragile enough to explode.

In some ways, it was.

They moved to his study.

No one touched the bear until a trusted electronics specialist arrived.

He examined the repaired left ear.

“Elena.”

She looked.

“You said this was sewn twice?”

“Yes.”

“First time?”

“Daniel.”

“When?”

“Before he gave it to me.”

“Second?”

“Me.”

“After Mia tore it last year.”

The specialist gently opened the older seam.

Inside the cotton stuffing was a narrow plastic capsule no bigger than a finger.

Elena stopped breathing.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Adrian removed it.

Inside:

A microSD card.

Three years.

A dead husband.

A missing folder.

A hidden passage.

All of it leading to something a man had sewn into a teddy bear before his daughter was born.

Dominic stared at the card.

“We need an isolated machine.”

Adrian nodded.

Marcus said:

“You also need the password.”

Everyone looked at him.

“You know it?”

“No.”

“Daniel told me Elena would.”

Elena shook her head.

“I don’t.”

Marcus looked at her.

“He said the password was the answer to the question you asked him the night he proposed.”

Elena froze.

Adrian watched memory cross her face.

Pain.

Then disbelief.

Then a tiny broken smile.

“What question?”

Marcus asked.

Elena whispered:

“How long?”

Adrian frowned.

“How long what?”

She stared at the card.

“When Daniel proposed, I asked how long he planned to love me.”

Her eyes filled.

“He said…”

She stopped.

Marcus waited.

Adrian said nothing.

Elena whispered:

“As long as truth survives.”

Four words.

The specialist typed them.

The encrypted folder opened.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Names.

Dates.

Adrian stared at the first page.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Not Luca Vescari.

Not a judge.

Not a police officer.

Nicholas Ferraro.

Adrian’s chief financial officer.

A man who had worked beside him for twelve years.

A man who had eaten dinner in this mansion twice that week.

A man who knew every security rotation.

Every business account.

Every blind spot.

Dominic’s expression became murderous.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“This is why somebody wanted the folder planted.”

“Yes.”

“What was in it?”

“Probably enough to make me suspect you before I found this.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Or enough to make Nicholas know whether Daniel’s evidence had surfaced.”

Adrian looked toward the hidden passage behind his study.

Nicholas Ferraro had designed the most recent renovation.

He knew the house.

He knew the passages.

He knew Rachel.

And now he knew Elena Carter lived under Adrian Moretti’s roof.

Adrian’s phone rang.

Nicholas.

Of course.

Adrian looked at the screen.

Dominic whispered:

“Don’t.”

Adrian answered.

“Nicholas.”

His CFO sounded calm.

“Adrian, I heard about the lockdown.”

“Yes.”

“Problem?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

At Daniel’s files.

At Mr. Buttons lying open on the desk.

Then he smiled without warmth.

“Broken clock.”

A pause.

Nicholas laughed.

“That all?”

“For now.”

Adrian ended the call.

Dominic looked at him.

“You’re going to pretend.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

Adrian’s eyes became cold.

“Until I know how many people he sold.”

Elena stepped forward.

“And then?”

Adrian looked at her.

The old answer would have involved a warehouse.

A gun.

A disappearance.

Mia’s voice echoed in his memory.

And you’ll say sorry?

He looked at the evidence.

“Then we prove it.”

Dominic stared.

Marcus almost smiled.

Elena said nothing.

But something in her expression changed.

Not trust.

May you like

Not yet.

Maybe the possibility of it.
