Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE MAN DOMINIC TRUSTED

Adrian returned to the estate at 3:08 in the morning.

Elena was awake.

Of course.

She sat in the library wearing an oversized cardigan, legs pulled beneath her.

Mr. Buttons rested beside her.

Mia slept upstairs.

Elena stood the moment Adrian entered.

“You came back.”

“I said I would.”

The words seemed to matter.

More than he expected.

She searched his face.

“What happened?”

Adrian told her about Nicholas.

Isabella.

His father.

His mother.

Everything except the final warning.

Someone Dominic trusts.

He stopped there.

Elena noticed.

“What else?”

“Nothing.”

Her expression hardened.

Adrian almost laughed.

“You do realize I can tell when you lie now.”

“That is inconvenient.”

“Mia is contagious.”

He sat.

“There’s another mole.”

Elena went still.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Dominic?”

“No.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

The answer came immediately.

Dominic had been beside Adrian since he was twenty-four.

He had saved Adrian’s life twice.

He had buried his own brother after a Vescari attack.

Trust was never absolute.

But if Dominic betrayed him, Adrian no longer understood the meaning of anything.

“Nicholas said someone Dominic trusts.”

Elena looked toward the hallway.

“Who does Dominic trust?”

“Very few people.”

“Names.”

“Paul.”

The guard who helped Mia hide.

“Not him.”

“Why?”

“He was attacked.”

“Could stage it.”

Adrian hated that she was right.

“Marco Santini.”

“Security systems.”

“Elio Russo.”

Dominic’s nephew.

“Drivers.”

“Carmen Russo.”

“Dominic’s sister.”

“Accounts.”

Elena looked at him.

“You trust family because Dominic does.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe that’s the mistake.”

The sentence hurt.

Again.

Family.

Adrian’s father.

His mother.

Nicholas’s sister.

Daniel.

Elena.

Mia.

Family could create loyalty.

Also leverage.

By sunrise, Adrian ordered a silent review of everyone Dominic personally vouched for.

Dominic was furious.

Not because Adrian doubted him.

Because somebody used his trust.

“Find them.”

That was all he said.

The answer appeared before noon.

Elio Russo.

Twenty-nine.

Dominic’s nephew.

Driver.

No criminal record beyond juvenile theft.

Worked for Adrian five years.

Debt:

$184,000.

Sports gambling.

Payments to a bookmaker connected to Vescari.

Dominic stared at the evidence.

His face changed into something Adrian had rarely seen.

Shame.

“I brought him in.”

“Yes.”

“I vouched.”

“Yes.”

“I should have known.”

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

Dominic’s eyes flashed.

“Don’t absolve me.”

“I’m not.”

Adrian remembered Elena.

“People are responsible for their choices.”

“Not ours.”

Dominic exhaled.

“When did you become philosophical?”

“A toddler.”

That almost made Dominic smile.

They did not arrest Elio immediately.

They watched.

At two twenty, Elio entered the family kitchen.

Spoke with Mia.

Adrian watched through security.

Every muscle in his body tightened.

Elio crouched.

Handed her a wrapped candy.

Mia took it.

Then looked around.

Adrian was already moving.

Before he reached the kitchen, Mia handed the candy back.

“Mommy says ask first.”

Elio smiled.

“Just one.”

“No.”

His smile tightened.

Then he touched her shoulder.

Adrian entered.

“Elio.”

The young man froze.

Mia smiled.

“Mr. Adrian.”

Adrian kept his voice calm.

“Go find your mother.”

“Elena’s upstairs.”

“I know.”

Mia picked up Mr. Buttons and skipped toward the door.

Then stopped.

She looked at Elio.

“You look scared.”

Elio’s face collapsed.

Mia pointed at Adrian.

“He says sorry now.”

Then she left.

Silence.

Adrian looked at Elio.

“What’s in the candy?”

Elio shook his head.

“Nothing.”

“Wrong answer.”

Dominic entered behind Adrian.

Elio saw his uncle.

Everything changed.

“Uncle Dom.”

Dominic stared at him.

No affection visible.

Maybe too much underneath.

“What did you give her?”

Elio started crying.

“It wasn’t poison.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“What?”

“Sleeping medicine.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“Why?”

Elio covered his face.

“They said she had to be quiet.”

“Who?”

“Vale.”

“Where were you taking her?”

“Nowhere.”

Adrian stepped closer.

Elio panicked.

“I swear.”

“They wanted me to make sure she slept after dinner.”

“Then what?”

“I leave the east service door unlocked.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“For Simon.”

“Yes.”

Adrian felt darkness rise again.

Mia sleeping.

Someone entering.

Elena waking to an empty bed.

No.

He forced his voice steady.

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Dominic grabbed Elio by the shirt.

Adrian stopped him.

“Dom.”

“He was going to drug her.”

“I know.”

“He’s my blood.”

“I know.”

Dominic’s hands shook.

Adrian said quietly:

“Let him talk.”

The federal team arrived secretly.

Elio agreed to cooperate within twenty minutes.

Not bravery.

Terror.

He gave them phone messages.

Instructions.

Payment records.

Simon Vale planned entry at eleven forty.

Objective:

Take Mia.

Not Elena.

Why?

Leverage.

To force Elena to surrender Daniel’s evidence and Adrian to abandon prosecution.

Vescari understood something faster than Adrian had.

Mia mattered to both of them.

At ten, Adrian wanted Elena and Mia moved to a secure federal location.

Elena refused.

“No.”

He stared.

“No?”

“Mia will panic if we wake her and take her somewhere surrounded by strangers.”

“Better panic than kidnapping.”

“I agree.”

“Then go.”

“Not without you.”

Adrian stopped.

She realized what she said.

Silence.

Elena continued quickly:

“They want you here too.”

“If you disappear, they know the plan failed.”

Adrian stared.

“You’re suggesting we stay.”

“Yes.”

“With a three-year-old.”

“She stays inside the reinforced safe room.”

“With me.”

“You?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Her eyes flashed.

“Stop.”

“What?”

“Deciding I need to be protected from every decision.”

“This is not household administration.”

“No.”

“This is my daughter.”

Exactly.

Adrian went quiet.

Elena stepped closer.

“You have spent days telling me truth matters.”

“Then let me choose what I do with it.”

He hated that.

Because it was correct.

“Fine.”

They created a plan.

Mia asleep in the safe room.

Elena with her.

Odette too.

Federal agents hidden through the east wing.

Dominic’s team controlling exits.

Elio pretending everything remained normal.

Adrian in the study.

At eleven forty-three, the east service door opened.

Simon Vale entered with two men.

No dramatic explosion.

No army.

Professionals.

Quiet.

They moved toward the family stairs.

Federal agents waited until all three crossed the threshold.

Then lights came on.

“Federal agents!”

Simon ran.

One man surrendered.

The second reached for a weapon and was tackled before he cleared his coat.

Simon disappeared through the service corridor.

Adrian knew where he was going.

The study.

He moved.

Dominic shouted after him.

Adrian entered through the front just as the hidden bookshelf panel opened.

Simon Vale stepped out.

Gun raised.

Both men froze.

Simon smiled.

“Moretti.”

Adrian stared.

“You entered my house twice.”

“Technically more.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

Simon continued.

“Your father made the same mistake.”

“What?”

“Thinking walls mean safety.”

Adrian’s stomach turned.

“You knew him?”

“My father killed him.”

The words landed.

Simon smiled.

“Family business.”

Adrian had a gun beneath his jacket.

He could draw.

Maybe win.

Maybe not.

Instead, he looked slightly past Simon.

The hidden microphone inside his study was active now.

Federal evidence.

“Why?”

Simon laughed.

“Your father was stubborn.”

“So you punish children too?”

“Children make men cooperative.”

Adrian felt rage become cold.

“You were going to take Mia.”

“Yes.”

“For Vescari.”

“Yes.”

“You drug children now?”

“Elio was supposed to.”

Simon’s smile sharpened.

“Family makes everyone weak eventually.”

Adrian heard Mia’s voice in memory.

Can I call you Dad?

Future he did not know existed.

Then Simon’s eyes shifted.

Half a second.

Dominic appeared behind him in the passage.

“Drop it.”

Simon turned.

Adrian moved.

The gun hit the floor.

Simon went down.

Alive.

Dominic pinned him.

Federal agents rushed in.

No bullet fired.

Adrian stood over the man whose father killed Enzo Moretti and who had come for Mia.

Every part of his old life demanded violence.

He did nothing.

Simon looked up and laughed.

“You’ve gone soft.”

Adrian stared.

“No.”

He glanced toward the stairs.

Toward the safe room.

Toward Elena and Mia.

“I finally found something more important than proving I’m hard.”

Federal agents pulled Simon away.

Dominic stood.

For several seconds, they said nothing.

Then Dominic asked:

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Adrian looked at him.

Dominic shrugged.

“Elena says honesty.”

Adrian laughed.

Upstairs, the safe-room door opened.

Mia ran out.

Elena tried to catch her.

“Mia!”

Too late.

The toddler reached Adrian.

Wrapped both arms around his legs.

He froze.

“Are the bad guys gone?”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“All?”

“For tonight.”

Mia frowned.

“That means no.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“She really is inconvenient.”

Elena laughed through tears.

Then Adrian bent and lifted Mia.

She immediately rested against him.

Trusting.

Completely.

Elena stood a few feet away.

Adrian looked at her.

No words.

Not yet.

May you like

But the space between them had changed.

And both knew it.
