Plot twist

Chapter 10 - THE LAKE WHERE ADRIAN’S FATHER NEVER CAME HOME FROM

The Vescari property sat on forty wooded acres north of Chicago.

Federal teams reached it before dawn.

Adrian arrived with Dominic and Marcus twenty minutes later.

He was not part of the tactical entry.

Sarah Whitman had made that painfully clear.

“You stay behind the perimeter.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You know who I am?”

“Yes.”

“That usually makes people less comfortable giving me instructions.”

Sarah shrugged.

“Federal employment builds resilience.”

Dominic smiled.

Adrian disliked both of them.

Agents entered.

No gunfire.

No explosion.

No cinematic chaos.

The main house was empty.

So were two outbuildings.

Then dogs found a trail toward the lake.

At the water stood an old boathouse.

Inside:

Luca Vescari.

Seventy? We said sixty. Make 68. Thin.

Tired.

No army.

One handgun on a table.

A suitcase.

Cash.

Passport.

He surrendered.

Adrian felt cheated.

For thirty years, Vescari existed inside his head as something monstrous.

A name connected to his father.

Daniel.

Mia.

Now he was simply an aging man in handcuffs wearing an expensive sweater.

When agents brought him out, Vescari saw Adrian.

He smiled.

“Enzo’s boy.”

Adrian’s entire body tightened.

Sarah stepped between them.

“No contact.”

Vescari laughed.

“He came all this way.”

Adrian said:

“Where?”

Sarah looked at him.

He ignored her.

“Where did you put my father?”

Vescari’s smile faded slightly.

“Still asking?”

“Yes.”

“Your mother knew.”

“I know.”

That surprised him.

Good.

Vescari looked toward the lake.

“North cove.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“Specific.”

“Old boat ramp.”

“Twenty yards out.”

“Concrete weights.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

Adrian felt nothing at first.

Then too much.

The lake.

Cold.

His father alone.

Twenty-nine years.

Vescari continued:

“He was brave.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Do not speak about him.”

“He begged for you.”

Adrian moved.

Sarah blocked him.

Dominic grabbed his shoulder.

Vescari smiled.

There.

That was what he wanted.

Power one last time.

Make Adrian lose control.

Prove men like them were all the same.

Adrian stopped.

Breathed.

Then stepped back.

Vescari’s smile weakened.

“You don’t want to know?”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice became quiet.

“I know enough.”

Agents took Vescari away.

Divers entered the water two hours later.

They recovered human remains.

Old.

Damaged.

A wedding band survived.

Inside:

E + R.

Enzo and Rosa.

Adrian’s parents.

He sat on the shore holding the ring.

Dominic stood nearby.

No words.

Marcus farther away.

Eventually Adrian called Elena.

She answered immediately.

“Adrian?”

He could not speak.

Her voice softened.

“They found him.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

He stared at the water.

“I thought I’d feel…”

“What?”

“Angry.”

“Relieved.”

“Something useful.”

Elena remained quiet.

“What do you feel?”

“Twelve.”

The word surprised him.

“I feel twelve.”

Her breath caught.

“Then be twelve for a minute.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Nobody had ever given him permission for that.

He cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

A grown man beside a lake where his father had been hidden for three decades.

Dominic looked away.

Marcus did too.

Elena stayed on the phone.

No advice.

No fixing.

Just there.

When Adrian returned to New York the next day, Mia met him in the foyer.

She ran.

He bent automatically.

Lifted her.

She touched his face.

“You cried.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

She had not told.

Kids noticed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I found my dad.”

Mia’s eyes widened.

“Like Daddy?”

Adrian swallowed.

“Kind of.”

“Is he coming here?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

Then Mia.

“He died a long time ago.”

Mia thought.

“Oh.”

Then she wrapped both arms around his neck.

No speech.

No question.

Just a hug.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Elena watched.

Tears filled hers.

Mia whispered:

“You can use Mr. Buttons.”

Adrian laughed through tears.

“Thank you.”

Later that week, Enzo Moretti was buried beside Rosa.

Small funeral.

No newspaper.

No organization procession.

Adrian did not want power around this.

Only people.

Dominic.

Elena.

Mia.

Marcus stood farther back.

At the grave, Adrian placed the recovered wedding ring beside the urn.

He whispered:

“She told me you couldn’t come home.”

Wind moved through the cemetery trees.

“I thought she meant you wouldn’t.”

His throat tightened.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena stood behind him.

Mia held her hand.

Adrian continued:

“I became angry at the wrong person for a long time.”

He almost smiled.

“Apparently I do that.”

Elena’s mouth twitched.

The clock.

Yes.

Adrian stood.

Mia approached the grave.

She put one small daisy on the soil.

“Hi, Mr. Adrian’s daddy.”

Adrian nearly broke.

Mia continued:

“Mr. Adrian says sorry now.”

Dominic made a sound that might have been a cough.

Elena covered her mouth.

Adrian stared at the toddler.

“Thank you, little one.”

Mia nodded.

Important work completed.

They walked toward the car.

Marcus received a call.

Stopped.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Adrian asked.

Marcus lowered the phone.

“Vescari’s grand jury indictment returned.”

Charges included Daniel Carter’s murder conspiracy.

Adrian looked at Elena.

Her eyes filled.

Marcus continued.

“Prosecutor thinks they can also charge Ferraro’s old police contacts.”

Daniel’s truth had survived.

Elena looked toward the cemetery.

Then whispered:

“As long as truth survives.”

Adrian took her hand.

May you like

This time no hesitation.

She held on.
