Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO WALKED THROUGH THE GATE

By noon, the Moretti estate had become a fortress.
Every gate was locked.
Every employee was accounted for.
Every vehicle entering the property was searched.
But Lorenzo knew something was wrong.
The threat had been too confident.
People who were afraid of him did not call his private number.
People who understood his reputation did not tell him to surrender a child.
Unless they believed they had leverage.
At 1:17 p.m., Gabe rushed into the study.
“Boss.”
Lorenzo looked up.
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
“Talk.”
“The west gate camera went offline.”
“How long?”
“Four minutes.”
Lorenzo stood.
“Why didn't I know?”
“We just discovered it.”
Lorenzo walked toward the security room.
On the monitors, the estate appeared normal.
Too normal.
“Pull the footage.”
Gabe did.
Static.
Nothing.
Then the screen flickered.
A man appeared.
Walking across the lawn.
Alone.
No weapon visible.
No mask.
No hurry.
Lorenzo stared.
“Who is that?”
Gabe zoomed in.
Victor Russo.
Alive.
Walking toward the house.
Lorenzo's face became expressionless.
“Get Elena and Sophie to the safe room.”
Gabe nodded.
“What about Victor?”
“I'll handle him.”
Lorenzo walked downstairs.
Victor entered the foyer without resistance.
He smiled.
“Lorenzo.”
“Victor.”
“You look exactly like Enzo.”
“People have said that.”
“Does it bother you?”
“No.”
Victor looked around.
“Nice place.”
“You're trespassing.”
Victor laughed.
“Still dramatic.”
Lorenzo stared at him.
“You killed Marcus.”
Victor's smile disappeared.
“Marcus was unfortunate.”
“You threatened my house.”
“You have something I need.”
“Sophie.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victor stepped closer.
“Because her father left something behind.”
“The memory card.”
Victor's eyes narrowed.
“So you found it.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know what's on it.”
“I do.”
Victor sighed.
“You don't understand the scale of this.”
“Explain it.”
“There are people above me.”
“I don't care.”
“You should.”
Victor stepped closer.
“Judges. Federal contractors. Hospital executives. Politicians. People who can make your entire organization disappear.”
Lorenzo smiled slightly.
“People have been trying.”
Victor's expression hardened.
“You think you're untouchable.”
“No.”
“Then why aren't you afraid?”
“Because you're standing in my house.”
Silence.
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“And you're alive because I want answers.”
Victor looked toward the staircase.
“Where is the girl?”
“You won't see her.”
“You think you can protect her?”
“Yes.”
Victor laughed.
“You don't even know why she's important.”
“Then tell me.”
Victor hesitated.
Then said:
“Her father hid the original ledger.”
“What ledger?”
“The hospital money.”
Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.
“Where?”
Victor smiled.
“If I knew, I'd already have it.”
“Then why Sophie?”
“Because Marcus trusted one person.”
“Who?”
“His daughter.”
Lorenzo understood.
Marcus hadn't hidden the ledger in a location.
He had hidden a clue.
Something Sophie carried without understanding.
“Where did Marcus keep his belongings?”
Victor looked at him.
“You really don't know.”
“What?”
“Her necklace.”
Lorenzo's eyes changed.
Sophie wore a tiny silver necklace.
Elena had mentioned it once.
It had belonged to Marcus.
Lorenzo turned.
“Gabe.”
“Yes?”
“Get Elena.”
Seconds later, Elena entered with Sophie behind her.
Sophie clutched her mother's hand.
Victor stared at the child.
Sophie stared back.
Then she whispered:
“Mama, that's the bad man.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“You've seen him?”
Sophie nodded.
“At the park.”
Lorenzo's eyes hardened.
Victor's expression changed.
“You remember me?”
Sophie nodded.
“You gave Daddy something.”
“What?”
Sophie looked at Elena.
“Daddy told me never to lose my necklace.”
Elena touched the silver pendant.
Lorenzo removed it carefully.
Inside the pendant was a tiny metal strip.
A code.
Victor stepped backward.
“No.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“You just confirmed everything.”
Victor suddenly reached into his jacket.
Three guards raised weapons.
Lorenzo didn't move.
Victor froze.
Then slowly raised his hands.
“Don't.”
Lorenzo looked at Gabe.
“Take him.”
Victor was dragged away.
Elena stared at Lorenzo.
“What happens now?”
Lorenzo looked at Sophie.
“Now we find the ledger.”
That night, the code opened a hidden archive.
Inside were financial records connecting Adrian Vale to a massive laundering network.
There were names.
Dates.
Payments.
Bank accounts.
And one final document.
A photograph of Marcus.
With a handwritten note:
IF MARCUS DIES, TAKE SOPHIE.
Lorenzo stared at it.
Then he looked at Elena.
“I promise you something.”
“What?”
“No one is taking your daughter.”
Elena began to cry.
Not because she believed the danger was over.
May you like
But because for the first time in years, someone else was standing between her and the people who had hunted her.
And Lorenzo Moretti intended to stay there.
