Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT THE ESTATE BURNED
The attack came at 2:41 a.m.
The first explosion shook the west wing.
Glass shattered.
Alarms screamed.
Elena woke with Sophie in her arms.
“What happened?”
Before she could answer, the bedroom door opened.
Lorenzo stood there.
“Get dressed.”
“Where?”
“Safe room.”
“Is it them?”
“Yes.”
Another explosion shook the walls.
Sophie began crying.
Lorenzo immediately crouched.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“Do you remember what I told you?”
“What?”
“Lions protect their babies.”
Sophie nodded.
“I'm scared.”
“So am I.”
Elena stared at him.
Lorenzo continued:
“But I'm not going to let anything happen to you.”
He took Sophie's hand.
They ran.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Gabe shouted orders through the hallway.
Security guards moved into position.
The estate became chaos.
But Lorenzo remained calm.
They reached the safe room.
The door sealed behind them.
Elena held Sophie tightly.
Lorenzo looked at the security monitor.
Men were entering through the damaged west wall.
Not ordinary criminals.
Professionals.
Adrian Vale's people.
Gabe entered.
“We have twenty minutes before they reach this section.”
“Evacuation route?”
“Blocked.”
“Second?”
“Compromised.”
Lorenzo looked at Elena.
“There's another way.”
“Where?”
“Wine cellar.”
They moved through a hidden passage.
The family vault beneath the estate had been built during Prohibition.
Nobody outside Lorenzo's inner circle knew it existed.
As they entered, Sophie noticed something.
“Mama.”
“What?”
“The necklace.”
Elena looked down.
The pendant was open.
Inside was another piece of paper.
A tiny folded photograph.
Marcus holding Sophie as a baby.
On the back was an address.
Lorenzo recognized it.
An abandoned church on the south side.
Marcus had hidden the original ledger there.
The explosion above them grew louder.
Gabe looked at Lorenzo.
“We have to go.”
They reached the underground tunnel.
A black SUV waited.
Lorenzo put Sophie inside.
Elena followed.
Then gunfire echoed behind them.
Lorenzo turned.
Three men appeared.
He raised his weapon.
“Get in the car.”
The fight lasted less than a minute.
Then Lorenzo ran.
The SUV disappeared into the night.
At the abandoned church, they found the ledger beneath a loose floorboard.
But they also found something else.
A letter.
Addressed to Elena.
She opened it with trembling hands.
“Lena,
If you're reading this, I'm gone.
I'm sorry.
I wanted to protect you and Sophie, but I made one mistake.
I trusted the wrong people.
The ledger contains everything.
But there is one thing it doesn't contain.
The truth about why they want Sophie.
Sophie was born after I discovered the network.
One of the men involved believed she was the only person who could expose him.
Not because she knows anything.
Because her existence proves what he did.
Protect her.
Never let them convince you that she is dangerous.
She is the reason I kept fighting.
Marcus.”
Elena broke down.
Lorenzo stood beside her.
She whispered:
“He loved her.”
“Yes.”
“He was trying to protect us.”
“Yes.”
Then they heard footsteps.
Lorenzo raised his weapon.
Adrian Vale stepped from the darkness.
He was older than Lorenzo expected.
Gray hair.
Expensive coat.
Calm eyes.
“You've been difficult to find,” Lorenzo said.
Vale smiled.
“You've been difficult to intimidate.”
“You killed Marcus.”
“I gave the order.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You destroyed my life.”
Vale looked at her.
“You destroyed your own life when you became curious.”
Lorenzo's expression darkened.
“You're finished.”
Vale laughed.
“No, Lorenzo.”
He pointed toward the child.
“I'm just beginning.”
Then police sirens sounded outside.
Vale's smile vanished.
Gabe had already contacted federal investigators.
The ledger was now in government hands.
Vale was arrested before he could escape.
For the first time in years, Elena could breathe.
But Lorenzo knew the fight wasn't completely over.
