Plot twist

Chapter 8 - THE LAST SECRET OF THE MORETTI HOUSE

Six months later, the Moretti estate no longer felt like a fortress.

Children's laughter echoed through the halls.

The foundation had opened.

Elena had become its director.

Sophie attended a small private school nearby.

And Lorenzo had changed in ways nobody around him expected.

He still ran his business.

Still demanded loyalty.

Still had enemies.

But his staff noticed something.

The dining room was no longer simply a place where people ate.

It had become a place where people talked.

Lorenzo joined them sometimes.

He listened.

He remembered birthdays.

He knew which employee had a sick parent.

Which guard had a daughter graduating.

Which maid's son needed college tuition.

Elena noticed.

“You're becoming human.”

Lorenzo looked offended.

“I was always human.”

“Debatable.”

He smiled.

Then one evening, Gabe arrived with a folder.

“Boss.”

Lorenzo opened it.

Inside was the final investigation report.

The last corrupt official had been arrested.

The network was dismantled.

Marcus's name had been cleared.

Elena's license was fully restored.

Lorenzo closed the folder.

“It’s over.”

Gabe nodded.

“For them.”

“For us too.”

Gabe smiled.

“I hope so.”

But that night, Lorenzo discovered one final secret.

It was inside an old box belonging to Enzo.

He had avoided opening it for years.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

And one photograph that stopped him.

Enzo standing beside Marcus Carter.

They had known each other.

Lorenzo read the letter beneath it.

Marcus had been working with Enzo before Enzo died.

The two men had been trying to expose the same network.

That meant Enzo's death hadn't been random.

Lorenzo sat down.

For years, he had believed Enzo had simply been caught in a war between rival criminals.

Now he knew the truth.

Enzo had been trying to protect people.

Just like Marcus.

Lorenzo showed Elena the evidence.

She read it carefully.

“You could reopen the case.”

“Yes.”

“Will you?”

He looked toward the window.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because Enzo wanted the truth exposed.”

“And now it is.”

“Yes.”

“Then what do you want?”

Lorenzo smiled.

“Peace.”

Elena took his hand.

“You deserve that.”

“So do you.”

Then Sophie came running in.

“Mama!”

She held a piece of paper.

“I made something.”

Elena looked.

It was a drawing.

Three people.

A tall man.

A woman.

A little girl.

Above them was a yellow sun.

“What is this?” Lorenzo asked.

“Our family.”

Lorenzo went completely still.

Elena looked at him.

Sophie smiled.

“You said lions stay.”

Lorenzo swallowed.

“Yes.”

“So you stay.”

He knelt.

“I'm staying.”

Sophie hugged him.

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

For the first time in his adult life, he understood something he'd spent years refusing to believe.

A family wasn't weakness.

It was the reason to survive.
