Plot twist

Chapter 8 - MY BROTHER ASKED ME TO VISIT HIM WITHOUT LAWYERS

Carlo’s letter came from prison.

One page.

Lorenzo,

Come alone. No attorneys. No Luca. No Maria.

I almost threw away.

Then last:

There is one thing about Father’s restitution trust Ferretti never knew.

Of course.

Manipulation.

Adrian said:

“Don’t go.”

Maria said:

“Your choice.”

Lily said:

“If you go, take lawyer.”

I smiled.

“I thought my choice.”

“It is.”

“You can choose correctly.”

Family.

I did not go alone.

I informed counsel.

Prison visit monitored.

No private secrecy.

Carlo laughed when saw.

“You still bring rules.”

“Yes.”

He looked older.

Gray.

Thinner.

Not dying.

Good.

I did not want convenient death absolution.

He sat behind glass? Maybe contact visit under supervision. We can have table.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Curiosity.”

“Not brother?”

“No.”

He flinched.

Then:

“Ferretti thought trust existed to hide payouts.”

“It did sometimes.”

“Not original reason.”

“What?”

“Grandfather.”

Our grandfather.

Carlo claimed trust predecessor created after 1979 dock explosion killed nine workers.

Duca company fault.

Insurance inadequate.

Families threatened to sue.

Our grandfather initially sent men to intimidate.

My father—young then—objected.

At nineteen.

He secretly sold property and compensated families through lawyer.

Later formalized trust.

I stared.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Carlo sneered.

“He had conscience in bursts.”

Sounds right.

“Why tell?”

“Because you’re turning him into villain in press.”

“I am not.”

“You say company harmed people.”

“It did.”

“He also paid.”

“Both.”

Carlo hated both.

He wanted father either strong patriarch or monster I betrayed.

Nuance denied him leverage.

Then he said:

“There’s an appendix.”

“What?”

“Founding schedule.”

“Nine dockworker families.”

“Not in current trust copies.”

“Where?”

“Father removed?”

“No.”

“Grandfather.”

“Carlo.”

“Where?”

He smiled.

“Duca family crypt.”

I almost laughed.

Too cinematic.

“Seriously?”

“Old chapel vault.”

“Behind marble memorial plate.”

“Why?”

“Grandfather didn’t trust banks.”

Maybe.

We did not go with crowbars.

Court authorization? It's family property, but historical records relevant claims. We notified special master and investigators.

Professional conservator opened cavity behind memorial plaque.

Inside tin document box.

Dry.

Founding schedule.

Nine families.

Payments.

Several names absent from modern trust.

Meaning descendants may have rights? Trust was precursor, perhaps claims fully paid. But records matter.

Also handwritten note from my father aged nineteen:

They lost men because we ignored the valve reports. If we pay only to stop lawsuit, we learn nothing.

My throat tightened.

He had written lesson before becoming man who ignored other lessons.

People regress.

Power changes.

Then another note:

Carlo says weakness invites claims. Lorenzo is eight and agrees with whoever last gives him candy.

I laughed unexpectedly.

Lorenzo eight.

No empire.

Maria later read copy.

“He sounded different.”

“Yes.”

“Do you wish had known?”

“Yes.”

Would it change?

Maybe not.

The trust independent process contacted descendants of nine families, not because unpaid necessarily but to verify.

Most had received settlements.

One family’s payment never cleared.

A widow died soon after.

Descendants located.

Claim.

Small relative now with interest maybe $900,000.

They received after review.

Another piece.

Carlo asked second visit.

I declined.

Why?

“I got what needed.”

He wrote:

Coward.

I did not respond.

Luca visited father later.

He told me only afterward.

“What did he want?”

I asked.

“To give me Duca name again.”

“And?”

“I told him Vieri is mother’s.”

“Good.”

He glared.

“Sorry.”

Then Luca said:

“He asked if I think he’s evil.”

“What did you say?”

“No.”

I looked.

“He liked?”

“No.”

“I said evil would make easy.”

Good.

“What do you think?”

“He chose himself over everyone often enough that result doesn’t need label.”

I nodded.

Luca had done therapy too apparently.

Adrian infected world.

Then Luca made choice.

He moved to New York? Maybe not. He accepted job with international maritime insurer in Boston, independent. He visited occasionally.

He and Lily became friends.

Not romance.

Important.

Maybe users like romance but no need. Could make them platonic due family complexity.

Lily later joked:

“Our parents tried ruining each other’s lives and now we share outlines.”

Law-school outlines.

Luca:

“Healthy.”

Good.

Maria cautious but accepted him.

Daniel liked because soccer.

I resented.

Normal.

The Duca trust claims process continued.

Press called it THE BLOOD FUND.

I hated.

It made victims into gothic decoration.

We pushed actual name:

Independent Restitution Trust.

Eventually court reformed governance.

No Duca officer as trustee.

Independent bank.

Victim advocate seat.

Former employee seat.

No confidentiality for reporting crimes.

No business loans.

Critical.

The company repaid all debt by year four.

Forty-seven unresolved names:

21 eligible verified claims.

11 previously resolved.

7 insufficient evidence but offered archival assistance/legal review.

8 could not locate.

Reserve maintained.

No automatic closure.

Good.

Lily’s forged claim was erased.

Her legitimate Elena line claim settled through Maria estate separately.

No eight million.

No Duca surname.

No proxy.

No “last witness.”

Then Lily graduated law school.

I attended.

So did Maria, Daniel, Luca, Adrian.

I brought flowers.

Not absurd giant arrangement.

Progress.

She became attorney at a nonprofit legal organization representing workers and witnesses in institutional-abuse cases.

Not mine.

Important.

At graduation I asked:

“Do you need anything?”

“Dinner.”

“Money?”

“No.”

“Job?”

“Absolutely no.”

“Security?”

She stared.

I stopped.

“Dinner.”

“Good.”

She groaned.

I smiled.

At dinner she gave me small box.

Inside copy of Elena’s original trust amendment.

“Why?”

“Frame?”

“No.”

“I thought you should have.”

I read line:

No beneficiary shall be required to trade lawful truth for financial support.

I looked at Lily.

“Your grandmother?”

“She pushed.”

“Yes.”

“Keep it.”

I did.

May you like

Not as family relic.

As governance rule.
