Plot twist

Chapter 10 - LILY TOLD ME SHE WAS GETTING MARRIED AND I ASKED THE WRONG QUESTION

She was twenty-nine when she told me.

Five years as attorney.

Sharp.

Exhausting.

Independent.

She came to my townhouse Sunday carrying pastries.

Maria and Daniel behind her.

I suspected birthday.

Not.

“There’s someone.”

Lily said.

I froze.

Daniel laughed.

“You know someone.”

I stared.

“Romantically.”

“Oh.”

Maria rolled eyes.

“Lorenzo.”

“What?”

“You look like police.”

I relaxed deliberately.

“Who?”

Lily smiled.

“Her name is Claire Bennett.”

I blinked.

Good.

No issue. User likes American style. Need respectful.

“She’s a civil engineer.”

“Where met?”

“Case.”

“Conflict?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Lily groaned.

I stopped.

Then:

“How long?”

“Two years.”

I stared.

“You hid two years?”

“Did not hide.”

“You didn’t tell me.”

“Those are not same.”

Correct.

“Maria knew?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Adrian?”

“Why would Adrian?”

“Everyone knows except me.”

Lily smiled.

“Because you ask too many questions.”

Fair.

Then she held hand.

Ring.

“We’re engaged.”

My chest tightened.

“Security background?”

Silence.

Everyone stared.

Wrong question.

I closed eyes.

“No.”

“Sorry.”

Lily laughed so hard she bent.

Maria wiped tears.

Daniel said:

“New Lorenzo lasted twelve seconds.”

I deserved.

“Correct question?”

I asked.

Lily smiled.

“Are you happy for me?”

“I am.”

There.

I hugged after she opened arms.

Claire Bennett met me two weeks later.

Thirty.

Structural/civil engineer working infrastructure firm.

Blunt.

No visible fear.

Excellent.

She shook hand.

“I’ve been warned.”

“By Lily?”

“Everyone.”

Good.

I asked no finances.

No family.

No background.

Hard.

Dinner went well.

Then Claire said:

“I do have one question.”

“What?”

“Does Duca security ever run people without consent?”

Old world? Yes.

Now?

“Not for family relationships.”

“Threat-specific investigations require legal basis.”

“Would you run me?”

“No.”

“Have you?”

“No.”

Lily watched.

Good.

Claire nodded.

“Then we’ll get along.”

Maybe.

Wedding planning.

Small.

Brooklyn botanical garden.

Not Duca estate—gone.

Maria cried.

Daniel cried.

I did not until ceremony.

Lily kept surname.

Claire kept hers.

No family naming.

At reception, Luca attended.

Adrian’s family.

Evelyn Park from company? Maybe not.

No corporate spectacle.

I gave toast short.

“I met Lily when she was three.”

“She accused employee before I understood why.”

“She has been correcting adults ever since.”

Laughter.

“She is not my daughter.”

Pause.

“She has never needed to be.”

“Family can be chosen without relabeling people.”

I looked at Claire.

“Thank you for choosing each other.”

Done.

Lily cried.

Then whispered:

“Acceptable.”

Good.

Years earlier, media would turn mafia boss and little girl.

Now no press.

Private.

Wonderful.

Then later trust issued final restitution payments for most claimants.

Reserve remained perpetual for unknown/new claims.

Duca Holdings finished repayment.

Company recovered financially.

Employee count grew again.

My wealth partly returned.

Not relevant.

The independent trust board asked whether I wanted ceremonial advisory seat.

“No.”

They looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Beneficiaries should not have former debtor directing.”

Good.

No groan.

I learned.

Then Adrian retired fully.

His replacement was not old family associate.

A woman named Tessa Morgan, former federal security/compliance professional.

No blood.

Adrian became grandparent.

Annoyingly happy.

Source said three kids; now grandchildren. Fine.

He visited.

“Do you miss old days?”

“No.”

“Liar.”

“Some.”

“Which?”

“Clear enemies.”

I understood.

Old world simple.

Loyal/disloyal.

Alive/dead.

Modern governance required uncertainty.

Harder.

Better.

Maria’s husband Daniel retired from teaching around then.

They moved to smaller house outside Queens.

Maria had become senior finance manager at nonprofit housing org.

Not Duca.

She reduced work.

Elena pendant in safe.

Bruno collar framed? Maybe no. Lily had taken Bruno collar? Source said hung beside pendant. Could give to her when moving.

Maria asked:

“Do you want collar?”

I said no.

Lily took.

Claire said:

“That is weird heirloom.”

Lily replied:

“Dog had standards.”

Good.

My townhouse kitchen became regular Sunday dinner.

People asked before coming mostly.

Lily sometimes used code without notice? She had code maybe.

One day walked in.

I stared.

“What?”

“Door unlocked.”

“Still knock.”

She grinned.

“Look who learned.”

Life.

Then came final corporate temptation.

Duca Holdings board considered merger.

Large international logistics company offered premium.

If accepted, Duca name disappears from operations.

Some family furious.

I was swing vote as shareholder? Could have significant share.

Everyone expected me protect name.

I asked valuation.

Employees.

Pensions.

Governance.

No sentiment.

Deal good.

I voted yes.

Duca Holdings merged.

Brand phased out over three years.

My grandfather’s company name gone from trucks.

Cousin said:

“You killed family.”

I answered:

“Family is at dinner Sunday.”

He hung up.

Fine.

May you like

The old idea of empire died not with gunfire, but merger documents.

That felt appropriate.
