THE MILLION DOLLAR ILLUSION / Chapter 4 / 7

Chapter 5 - THE COLLAPSE

"FBI! NOBODY MOVE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

The warehouse erupted into chaos. High-intensity floodlights pierced the gloom, blinding Silas and his men as a dozen heavily armored federal agents swarmed the room. Laser sights danced across Silas’s chest. The thugs who had been threatening Mason moments earlier instantly dropped their handguns, raising their hands in surrender as they were tackled to the concrete.

Silas remained still, his face pale, realizing he had walked directly into a massive, heavily coordinated trap. An agent kicked the back of his knees, forcing him to the floor, and roughly clicked handcuffs around his wrists.

Ruby stepped back, perfectly calm amidst the screaming and the flashing red and blue lights. She watched as Elias Thorne walked through the breached doors, adjusting his silk tie, looking as casual as if he were arriving at a dinner party. He walked directly to Ruby and gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Flawless execution, Mrs. Nickerson," Elias murmured. "The FBI has already raided Mercy General. Dr. Aris is currently in custody, and the hospital administrators who facilitated the fraud are being indicted as we speak."

In the center of the room, Mason was still tied to the chair, hyperventilating. An agent stepped forward and sliced the zip-ties with a tactical knife. Mason stumbled out of the chair, his legs shaking, looking wildly around the room. He saw his mother standing next to Elias, untouched, unbothered, and protected by a wall of federal agents.

"Mom..." Mason whimpered, stumbling toward her. "Mom, thank God. Thank God you brought the police. I thought I was going to die."

He reached out to hug her, expecting the familiar, desperate embrace of the woman who had spent his entire life shielding him from the consequences of his actions.

Ruby took a sharp step back, holding up her hand. Mason froze.

"Don't touch me," she said, her voice dangerously quiet.

"Mom, it's me. It's Mason. We're safe now," he pleaded, tears streaming down his face, trying to play the victim one last time. "Silas forced me to do this. He made me lie. You have to believe me, Mom. I’m sick, remember? My heart—"

"Stop it, Mason," Ruby interrupted, her tone dripping with absolute disgust. "It’s over. I know everything. I know about Dr. Aris. I know about the saline IVs. I know about the nightclub, the fake startup, and the half-million dollars you stole from me to fund your pathetic, selfish lifestyle."

Mason’s mouth opened and closed like a fish suffocating on dry land. "Who... who told you?"

Serena emerged from behind Elias, escorted by a female FBI agent. She looked at Mason with a mixture of pity and rage. "I did, Mason. Because I couldn't watch you destroy the only person who ever truly loved you."

Mason’s face contorted with fury. He lunged at Serena, but two federal agents instantly grabbed him by the arms, slamming him face-first into the hood of a parked forklift.

"Mason Nickerson, you are under arrest," a tall, stern-faced FBI agent announced, pulling Mason’s arms behind his back. "You are being charged with wire fraud, insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit extortion, and elder financial abuse. You have the right to remain silent..."

"Mom!" Mason screamed, thrashing against the agents as the cold steel cuffs locked around his wrists. "Mom, you can't let them do this! I'm your son! You won the lottery, right? You have twenty million dollars! You can hire a lawyer! You can bail me out! Mom, please!"

Ruby walked slowly toward him. She stopped just inches away from his face. She looked into his eyes and saw nothing but the hollow, greedy void that had consumed the boy she once raised.

"I did hire a lawyer, Mason," Ruby said softly, gesturing to Elias. "And he is very, very expensive. But he doesn't work for you. As for bail? You're going to sit in a federal holding cell until your trial. I won't spend another dime on your lies."

"You can't do this to me!" Mason shrieked, his voice cracking with genuine panic as the agents began dragging him toward the door. "I'M YOUR SON! YOU OWE ME!"

"I owe you nothing," Ruby said, her voice steady and resolute. She turned her back on him, not flinching even as his desperate screams echoed through the warehouse and faded into the back of a police cruiser. For the first time in thirty-four years, Ruby Nickerson was entirely free.
