Chapter 7 - THE CRIMSON DAWN

Two years had passed since the gavel fell.
The Independencia neighborhood was far behind her now. Ruby stood on the expansive wooden deck of her newly constructed, custom-built home overlooking the serene, glittering waters of Lake Tahoe. The air was crisp, scented with pine and fresh mountain wind. She held a steaming mug of tea, wrapped in a luxurious cashmere shawl, watching the sunrise paint the sky in brilliant hues of orange and purple.
The twenty million dollars had changed her life, but not in the flashy, frivolous ways Mason had once dreamed of. With Elias Thorne’s brilliant financial management, the Crimson Dawn Trust had grown. Ruby had secured her future, ensuring she would never have to worry about a medical bill, a mortgage, or a grocery tab ever again.
But she hadn't stopped there.
Ruby walked back inside her massive, sunlit living room, where the walls were adorned with beautiful local art and photographs of the people who truly mattered to her. She picked up a glossy brochure sitting on her kitchen island.
The Crimson Dawn Foundation: Protecting Our Elders.
Ruby had taken a massive portion of her winnings and founded a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting elder financial abuse. She hired private investigators, elite attorneys like Elias’s associates, and financial advisors to help vulnerable senior citizens who were being exploited by predatory family members, scammers, and corrupt caregivers. In just two years, her foundation had recovered millions of dollars for victims and sent dozens of fraudsters to prison. She had turned her greatest trauma into a shield for others.
"Ruby? Are the caterers here yet?"
Serena walked into the kitchen, carrying a large box of floral arrangements. Serena looked entirely transformed. Gone was the terrified, exhausted girl from the diner. She was now dressed in a sharp business suit, radiating confidence. Ruby had paid for Serena’s college tuition, and she had just graduated with a degree in social work, immediately stepping into the role of Director of Operations at the foundation.
"They should be here any minute, sweetheart," Ruby smiled, walking over and kissing Serena on the cheek.
Today was a special day. They were hosting a massive charity gala at the estate to raise additional funds for the foundation. Elias Thorne was coming, along with the District Attorney, the FBI agents who had worked the case, and dozens of people whose lives Ruby had saved over the past two years.
"I can't believe how beautiful this place looks," Serena said, arranging the white lilies on the dining table. She paused, looking at Ruby with a soft, affectionate expression. "I’m so proud of you, Ruby. You took the worst thing that could ever happen to a mother, and you built an empire of good out of it."
Ruby looked out the window toward the lake. She still thought of Mason sometimes. It was impossible to completely erase thirty-four years of memory. But the pain was no longer a jagged, bleeding wound. It had scarred over, becoming a quiet reminder of her own strength. She didn't hate him anymore; she simply felt nothing for him at all. She had found a new family—a family built on mutual respect, honesty, and genuine love, not obligation and extortion.

"We built it together, Serena," Ruby corrected gently.
The doorbell rang, echoing through the grand house. The caterers had arrived, followed closely by the first wave of guests.
