THE MILLION DOLLAR ILLUSION / Chapter 7 / 7

Chapter 8 - A NEW HORIZON

The evening was a spectacular success. The estate was filled with music, laughter, and the clinking of champagne glasses. The sprawling backyard was illuminated by hundreds of fairy lights strung through the pine trees, reflecting off the calm surface of the lake.

Elias Thorne stood by the outdoor fireplace, holding a glass of scotch, looking remarkably relaxed for a man known as the city's most ruthless shark. He raised his glass to Ruby as she walked over.

"A toast, Mrs. Nickerson," Elias said, a rare, genuine smile gracing his features. "To the most formidable client I have ever had the pleasure of representing. The foundation raised over two million dollars tonight alone."

"I couldn't have done it without you, Elias," Ruby said, clinking her sparkling water against his glass. "You gave me the tools to fight back when I didn't even know how to stand up."

"You always had the steel inside you, Ruby. I just helped you sharpen it," Elias replied gracefully before stepping away to mingle with a group of local politicians.

Ruby walked to the edge of the deck, resting her hands on the wooden railing. The night air was cool, but she felt incredibly warm. She watched Serena laughing with a group of young advocates near the gardens. She saw families she had helped, elderly men and women who had been given their dignity and their lives back, enjoying the food and the music.

For decades, Ruby had defined herself solely as Mason’s mother. She had believed her only purpose in life was to sacrifice herself on the altar of his needs, shrinking herself down until there was nothing left but an empty wallet and a tired heart.

But standing here now, a multi-millionaire, a philanthropist, and a protector of the vulnerable, she finally understood the truth. Her life wasn't over when she walked away from Room 12 at Mercy General Hospital. That was the day her life actually began.

She reached into her purse—a beautiful, designer bag she had bought for herself in Paris the year prior—and pulled out her phone. There was a notification from the federal prison system. It was an automated message indicating that Inmate Nickerson had requested a phone call. He tried once a month, like clockwork.

Ruby looked at the notification. She didn't feel anger. She didn't feel guilt.

With a calm, steady thumb, she swiped the notification away, deleted the message, and permanently blocked the number.

She slipped the phone back into her purse, took a deep breath of the sweet mountain air, and turned around to rejoin the party, stepping fully into the bright, beautiful light of her new horizon.
