Chapter 4 - THE GATHERING STORM

The early morning rain of a cold New York Friday pattered against the glass of the secure conference room inside the Federal Treasury Building.
I sat at the metal table, my warm beige trench coat draped over the back of my chair, my eyes fixed on the digital projection displaying the Mercer family's frozen assets.
Beside me stood Captain Marcus Bennett, my older brother, his dark military-like uniform crisp and imposing under the bright fluorescent lights.
"We have the authorization, Sophia," Marcus said, placing a secure, metal-encased digital drive on the table with a quiet, satisfying clack.
"Our digital forensic team executed a silent search warrant on the Mercer-Logistics mainframe three hours ago."
"We found the deleted emails between Richard and his mother’s private wealth manager, Dr. Robert Sterling."
"They weren't just trying to cover their real estate debts, Sophia."
"They were actively preparing to sell your father’s maritime shipping patents to an offshore competitor in Switzerland for twenty-eight million dollars."
"The transaction was scheduled to close at the annual high-society charity gala tonight at the Metropolitan Museum of Art."
I clutched my hands together, my knuckles turning a stark, bloodless white as the full extent of their greed was laid bare.
"The patents were my father's life’s work, Marcus," I whispered, my voice trembling with a deep, ancestral fury.
"They represent the safety and the future of every family that works for our shipping lines."
"If they sell those patents, our employees will be laid off, and our family name will be permanently associated with corporate collapse."
"They won't sell anything, Sophia," Marcus said, his hand resting gently on my shoulder, his fingers steady and warm.
"We have already coordinated with the state attorney's office to execute an emergency federal freeze on all patent transfers."
"But if we arrest them now, Victoria’s corporate lawyers will claim she was simply an innocent bystander who had no knowledge of her son's transactions."
"She will use her high-society connections to spin the narrative, claiming you are a bitter ex-wife trying to destroy her family's name out of spite."
"I am not going to let her spin anything, Marcus," I said, a dangerous, absolute focus settling behind my eyes.
"Victoria Mercer has spent her entire life hiding behind her expensive Chanel dresses, her charity galas, and her public reputation."
"She believes she is untouchable because she is surrounded by Manhattan’s elite."
"So we are going to go to her gala tonight."
May you like
"We are going to let her stand on that stage in front of her wealthiest investors and real estate partners, believing she has successfully stolen my family's legacy."
"And then, we are going to walk through the door and show the entire world the monster hiding beneath the pearls."
