Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF MERCER

The three hundred high-society guests stood in a state of suspended, paralyzed shock as the federal marshals flooded the platform.

Richard tried to lunge toward the private service exit behind the ancient Egyptian temple ruins, his face contorted into a monstrous, angry snarl of panic.

But two heavily built marshals tackled him to the stone floorboards, pinning his navy-clad frame against the white silk tablecloth and snapping the steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"This is an absolute outrage!" Richard screamed, his voice cracking as his custom tuxedo was stained with the dirt of the floor.

"We have the legal right to these assets!"

"The only place you have a right to is a federal penitentiary, Richard," Marcus Bennett said, stepping onto the platform and displaying the secure digital drive.

He plugged the drive into the room's main media console, his eyes locked onto Victoria's trembling hands.

The massive, sixty-foot projector screens behind the temple ruins instantly illuminated, displaying a high-definition document scan that made the entire room let out a collective gasp of horror.

The screens displayed the original, uncorrupted banking transactions showing Richard siphoning four million dollars from our employee retirement fund.

Beside the statement lay the physical, unedited video of Victoria’s confrontation at my penthouse door, her voice booming through the temple wing:

"You ungrateful, scheming little child! Without our family's social standing, your father's company would have been bankrupt years ago! You owe us everything!"

The three hundred guests watched in breathless, paralyzed horror as the evidence of their multi-million-dollar conspiracy and domestic abuse was laid...

"My God," the board chairman whispered, standing up from his chair in deep, professional disgust.

"This... this is monstrous."

"They were systematically poisoning their own daughter-in-law's reputation and holding her legacy hostage to cover their corporate debts."

Victoria stood in the center of the stage, her hands shaking violently as the female marshals secured her arms behind her back, her pearls clinking uselessly.

"The house you built was paid for with my father's legacy, Victoria," I said, looking my mother-in-law directly in the eyes with a cold, absolute strength.

"And by tomorrow morning, your name will be permanently erased from this city's registries."

The heavy metallic click of the restraints closing around Victoria’s wrists was the most satisfying sound I had ever heard.

The golden queen of the Mercer dynasty was led away in chains, her life of luxury traded for a concrete cell.
