Chapter 11 - THE LAST WAR OF LORENZO BOLARO

Lorenzo had left no note.

No message.

No explanation.

His phone sat inside his apartment.

His car remained in the garage.

Marco had not seen him for twelve hours.

That frightened Maya more than a threat would have.

Lorenzo Bolaro did not disappear accidentally.

He disappeared because he wanted nobody following.

Maya went to his study.

Elena joined her.

They searched everything.

Nothing.

Then Maya saw the photograph on his desk.

Elena.

Nico.

Lorenzo.

Taken months earlier.

Behind it was a second photograph.

Maya.

Holding Nico at the hospital.

She stared at it.

Elena saw.

Neither woman said anything.

Under the frame was an envelope.

One name.

MAYA.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Inside:

If I do this right, Nico never inherits my enemies.

Maya looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Elena knew.

“He’s ending it.”

Lorenzo had spent months dismantling operations peacefully.

But several old captains refused.

They were planning to rebuild the organization using Nico’s name someday as legitimacy.

Lorenzo had learned about the plan.

He intended to eliminate the threat alone.

Not by killing them.

By surrendering every piece of evidence necessary to destroy them.

But to obtain the final records, he had to meet them.

Marco traced him to an old warehouse.

Maya arrived with Elena and federal agents.

Inside, Lorenzo stood surrounded by six men.

His former lieutenants.

One spoke.

“You’re throwing away everything your father built.”

Lorenzo answered calmly.

“My father built a prison and taught me to call it a kingdom.”

Maya heard the words from outside.

“You think that nurse changed you?”

“No.”

Lorenzo looked toward the man.

“My son did.”

The lieutenant raised a weapon.

Agents moved.

Shots erupted.

Maya ducked.

Lorenzo tackled one man.

Marco entered from the opposite side.

Within minutes, it ended.

No execution.

No massacre.

Arrests.

Evidence.

The final pieces of Lorenzo’s criminal empire collapsed under federal indictments.

Lorenzo walked outside.

Maya approached him.

Then slapped him.

Hard.

Everyone froze.

Lorenzo blinked.

“You disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“You left a letter.”

“Yes.”

“You thought that was acceptable?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She hit his chest with both hands.

“You could have died.”

He caught her wrists gently.

“I didn’t want you involved.”

“That isn’t your decision.”

He stared at her.

Maya realized what she had said.

Neither moved.

Then Lorenzo whispered:

“I love you.”

The world seemed to become silent.

Maya looked at him.

“No.”

His face fell.

“No?”

“You don’t get to disappear for twelve hours, nearly get yourself killed, and then solve the argument with that sentence.”

A laugh escaped Elena behind them.

Lorenzo looked almost offended.

“I wasn’t trying to solve the argument.”

“Good.”

“I meant it.”

Maya’s anger softened.

“I know.”

He released her wrists.

“And?”

“And I’m furious with you.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It’s the answer you’re getting today.”

She walked away.

Lorenzo watched her.

Elena stepped beside him.

“She loves you too.”

He glanced at his estranged wife.

“How do you know?”

“Because I used to look at you exactly like that.”

The sadness in her voice was gentle now.

Their marriage had ended legally two weeks earlier.

Not bitterly.

Not easily.

But honestly.

Lorenzo looked toward Maya.

“I don’t deserve her.”

Elena smiled.

May you like

“That’s not your decision either.”
