Plot twist

Chapter 8 - THE SISTER WHO BETRAYED HIM

Isabella woke tied to a chair.

Victor Crane sat across from her.

“You ruined everything.”

She spat blood onto the floor.

“You poisoned a baby.”

“You helped build the system that allowed me to.”

Her eyes closed.

That truth hurt because it was true.

Years earlier, Isabella had believed Victor Crane was simply another ambitious man willing to profit from the hidden machinery of the Bolaro empire.

Illegal pharmaceuticals.

False invoices.

Shell companies.

Money washed through clinics.

Nobody was supposed to die.

Then Elena discovered them.

Everything changed.

“You told me Elena would only sleep,” Isabella whispered.

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

“You killed her.”

Crane smiled.

“No. I kept her.”

“Why?”

“Because Elena knew where the emergency accounts were.”

Isabella stared at him.

“And Nico?”

“Insurance.”

Her face twisted.

“He’s eight months old.”

“And worth several hundred million dollars.”

“You’re a monster.”

Crane laughed.

“You introduced me to the family.”

Back at the hospital, Elena was telling Lorenzo the truth.

Maya remained only because Elena asked her to.

“I tried to leave,” Elena said.

“I know.”

“I was going to take Nico.”

“I know.”

“I contacted federal prosecutors.”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

“But I wasn’t trying to destroy you.”

“You were going to give them evidence.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the window.

“About me?”

“About the people around you.”

“That distinction wouldn’t have mattered.”

“It mattered to me.”

Lorenzo said nothing.

Elena’s voice broke.

“I wanted our son to grow up knowing his father. I just didn’t want him growing up learning that violence was the only language powerful men respected.”

Maya watched Lorenzo absorb the sentence.

For years, fear had protected him.

Now he was beginning to understand what it had cost.

“I would have left,” he said.

Elena stared at him.

“If you had told me—”

“I did tell you.”

He closed his eyes.

She was right.

Not about Isabella.

Not about Crane.

But about leaving.

She had asked.

He had refused.

Lorenzo sat beside her.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena began crying.

So did he.

Maya quietly stepped outside.

Some conversations belonged to the people whose hearts had survived them.

Marco was waiting.

“We found Isabella.”

“Where?”

“Crane sent coordinates.”

“That sounds like a trap.”

“It is.”

A video arrived moments later.

Isabella appeared tied to a chair.

Crane stood behind her.

“Midnight tomorrow,” he said. “Bring Elena and the evidence.”

Lorenzo watched from the doorway.

Elena heard.

“No.”

He turned.

Crane continued.

“Or Isabella dies.”

The video ended.

Elena looked at Lorenzo.

“You can’t give me to him.”

“I won’t.”

“And Isabella?”

His face became hard.

“She made her choices.”

Maya understood his anger.

But she also saw Elena’s reaction.

“Lorenzo.”

“No.”

“She helped Crane hurt me.”

“Yes.”

“She also tried to help me escape after Nico was born.”

Everyone stared at her.

“What?”

Elena explained.

Three hours after the delivery, she woke inside a private recovery room.

She had been told Nico had died.

Crane expected grief and sedation to keep her compliant.

Instead, Isabella came to her.

Crying.

Horrified.

She confessed that the drug had caused complications.

Then she tried to get Elena out.

Crane caught them.

He moved Elena that night.

Isabella never saw her again.

“She thought I died later,” Elena said.

Lorenzo looked shattered.

“She still helped him.”

“Yes.”

“But she tried to undo it.”

“Yes.”

Elena took his hand.

“If you leave her there, you’re letting Victor decide who our family becomes.”

That sentence changed something.

At 10:00 the next night, they prepared the rescue.

This time, Elena insisted on participating.

Lorenzo refused.

She insisted harder.

Maya almost enjoyed watching someone else argue with him.

“You’ve been imprisoned eight months,” Lorenzo said.

“And I know Victor better than you do.”

“You’re recovering.”

“I survived Victor Crane.”

Elena looked toward Maya.

“Tell him.”

Maya held up both hands.

“I’m staying out of this marriage.”

For the first time in days, Elena laughed.

Even Lorenzo smiled.

The moment didn’t last.

The exchange location was an abandoned church.

Crane demanded Elena enter alone.

She did.

Wearing a transmitter beneath her clothes.

Maya waited in the medical vehicle.

Lorenzo and Marco surrounded the building.

Inside, Crane smiled when Elena entered.

“You always were brave.”

“You always mistook cruelty for intelligence.”

He pointed toward Isabella.

“Come forward.”

Elena did.

Crane untied Isabella.

Then he raised his gun.

Not toward Elena.

Toward himself.

Isabella stared.

“What are you doing?”

Crane smiled.

“You think this is about escaping?”

Police sirens erupted outside.

Lorenzo frowned.

Marco swore.

Dozens of federal vehicles surrounded the church.

Crane had called them himself.

He wanted Lorenzo arrested.

Evidence of weapons, illegal operations and kidnapping had been planted throughout the building.

Crane intended to walk out as the heroic physician who had exposed Chicago’s most dangerous criminal.

Except Elena had anticipated him.

When federal agents entered, she raised both hands.

“My name is Elena Bolaro.”

The lead agent froze.

“I was declared dead eight months ago by Dr. Victor Crane.”

Crane’s smile vanished.

“And I have evidence proving he abducted me, falsified my death certificate and repeatedly poisoned my infant son.”

The room changed.

Crane raised his weapon.

Maya saw the movement through the live feed.

“Gun!”

Lorenzo entered before anyone could stop him.

Crane fired.

The bullet struck Lorenzo in the chest.

He fell.

Maya ran.

She reached him seconds later.

Blood spread across his shirt.

“Elena…”

“She’s safe.”

“Nico…”

“Safe.”

His eyes found Maya’s.

“Don’t let me die.”

It was the first time Lorenzo Bolaro had ever asked anyone for his own life.

Maya pressed her hands against the wound.

“You’re not dying tonight.”

Behind her, federal agents dragged Victor Crane away in handcuffs.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

But as Maya fought to keep Lorenzo conscious, Crane looked over his shoulder and smiled.

Because he knew one thing they didn’t.

May you like

The poisoning of Nico had never been his final plan.
