Chapter 12 - ISABELLA’S CONFESSION

Isabella Bolaro received a reduced sentence because of her cooperation.

Lorenzo attended the hearing.

So did Elena.

Maya sat in the back.

Isabella stood before the judge and admitted everything.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Illegal pharmaceutical distribution.

Her role in drugging Elena.

Her silence after discovering Crane had survived.

When asked why she had done it, Isabella cried.

“Because I spent my entire life believing protecting my family meant controlling what could hurt them.”

Lorenzo looked down.

The words sounded familiar.

Isabella continued.

“My brother taught me that fear could keep people loyal. Our father taught him. His father taught him. I blamed everyone except myself.”

She looked toward Lorenzo.

“I was jealous of Elena because she could reach a part of my brother I thought belonged to our family.”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I told myself I was protecting him. I was really protecting my place beside him.”

Then Isabella looked at Maya.

“And when Maya came, I hated her for the same reason.”

Maya was surprised.

“She saw Nico as a child, not an heir. She saw Lorenzo as a father, not a boss. That made her dangerous to everything we had been taught.”

The judge sentenced Isabella to eight years.

Lorenzo visited her afterward.

They sat separated by glass.

“I’m sorry,” Isabella said.

“I know.”

“Do you forgive me?”

He was silent for a long time.

“I don’t know yet.”

She nodded.

“That’s fair.”

“But Nico will know you’re his aunt.”

Isabella began crying.

“And if you spend the next eight years becoming someone safe for him to know, you’ll have a place in his life.”

“Thank you.”

Lorenzo touched the glass.

Isabella placed her hand opposite his.

It wasn’t forgiveness.

But it was a beginning.

Outside, Maya waited.

“How was it?”

“Hard.”

“Those tend to be the important conversations.”

He looked at her.

“You’re irritatingly wise.”

“Occupational hazard.”

They walked toward the parking lot.

“Maya.”

“Yes?”

“Dinner.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“That sounded like an order.”

He corrected himself.

“Would you have dinner with me?”

“Better.”

“Is that a yes?”

“No.”

His face fell.

She smiled.

“Ask me Friday.”

“Why Friday?”

“Because I’m working tonight.”

Lorenzo laughed.

A real laugh.

Something Maya had almost never heard.

“Friday.”

“Yes.”

Friday became dinner.

Dinner became another.

Then another.

Lorenzo never brought guards inside the restaurant.

Never ordered for her.

Never demanded where she was.

Never tried to turn affection into control.

He was learning.

Sometimes badly.

Sometimes painfully.

But genuinely.

Nico turned one.

At his birthday party, Elena brought a cake.

Adriana brought far too many presents.

Marco taught Nico to say a word that sounded suspiciously like “boss.”

Maya threatened to ban Marco from future birthdays.

Lorenzo watched all of them from across the garden.

His family.

Broken.

Rebuilt.

Different.

Maya walked beside him.

“You’re staring.”

“I’m thinking.”

“Dangerous.”

He smiled.

“I spent most of my life believing power meant nobody could take anything from me.”

“And?”

“It turns out power doesn’t stop loss.”

“No.”

“But maybe love teaches you how to survive it.”

Maya looked at him.

“That was almost profound.”

“Almost?”

“Don’t get arrogant.”

He kissed her.

Slowly.

Carefully.

For the first time, Maya kissed him back without fear of what the moment meant.

Behind them, Elena shouted:

“Finally!”

Maya pulled away, laughing.

Lorenzo groaned.

And Nico clapped his hands as though the entire thing had been arranged for his entertainment.

For once, happiness did not feel like something waiting to be destroyed.

But there was still one final truth Elena had not told Lorenzo.

A truth hidden inside the evidence she had recovered from Victor Crane.

May you like

And when she finally showed it to him, it would change what Lorenzo believed about his father, his empire, and the reason Elena had been targeted in the first place.
