The Sky-Rise Ledger / Chapter 1 / 4

Part 1: Under Whose Roof

My 5-year-old daughter was burning with a 104°F fever, but my mother-in-law refused to let us leave. “The guests come first,” she said. When I insisted on taking my child to the hospital, my husband slapped me. “You're living under our roof,” he yelled. I wiped the blood from my lip, carried my daughter out the front door, and calmly called the one person who could remind them whose roof it really was...
The only sound in the nursery was my four-year-old daughter's uneven breathing.
Lily lay curled beneath a light blanket, her tiny body trembling uncontrollably despite the fever medication I had already given her. Her cheeks were flushed a frightening shade of red.
"Mommy..." she whispered weakly. "I'm so cold."
I touched her forehead.
It was burning.
One hundred and four degrees.
My heart dropped.
Without wasting another second, I wrapped her in a blanket, grabbed her medical bag, and rushed toward the front door. We needed the emergency room immediately.
I had barely stepped into the marble hallway when someone blocked my path.
My mother-in-law.
Agnes.
Dressed in a silk evening gown with diamonds glittering around her neck, she looked me up and down with obvious annoyance instead of concern.
From downstairs came the sound of laughter, clinking glasses, and arriving guests.
The dinner party had already begun.
"And where do you think you're going?" Agnes demanded.
"To the hospital," I answered. "Lily has a 104-degree fever."
She didn't even look at her granddaughter.
"Guests are arriving. The chef is waiting for instructions, and the five-course dinner isn't going to prepare itself."
I stared at her.
"My daughter can barely stay awake."
Agnes folded her arms.
"It's only a fever. Give her another dose of medicine and stop looking for excuses to embarrass this family."
Rage surged through me.
"Move."
I tried to step around her, but she deliberately blocked me again.
At that moment, the study door opened.
My husband, Julian, stepped into the hallway, adjusting the cuffs of his custom tuxedo.
He looked irritated.
Not frightened.
Not worried.
Just annoyed that his evening had been interrupted.
"What is all this yelling?" he asked.
"Lily needs the hospital," I said.
He sighed dramatically.
"Evelyn, you're overreacting again."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Our daughter is sick."
"So give her medicine."
"My uncle is bringing several important investors tonight," Julian replied coldly. "Everyone is expecting dinner. Stop making everything about yourself."
For a long moment, I simply looked at him.
We were standing inside a fifteen-million-dollar mansion.
A mansion they believed belonged to Julian.
A lifestyle they believed they had earned.
Neither of them knew that nearly everything surrounding them existed because of me.
"Get out of my way," I said quietly.
Julian's face hardened.
"Excuse me?"
"I'm taking Lily to the hospital."
I stepped forward.
Instead of helping his daughter...
He raised his hand.
The slap exploded across my face.
My head snapped sideways into the wall.
Pain shot through my jaw as the taste of blood filled my mouth.
I tightened my arms around Lily so she wouldn't slip from my grasp.
She began crying against my shoulder.
Agnes watched with complete satisfaction.
Julian pointed at me, his voice shaking with fury.
"How dare you speak to my mother like that while you're living under our roof?"
He took another threatening step.
"If you walk out that door tonight, don't bother coming back. You'll leave with nothing."
"No house."
"No money."
"No custody."
He believed every word.
He thought I was a helpless housewife completely dependent on his paycheck.
He expected me to cry.
To apologize.
To beg.
Instead...
Something inside me became perfectly still.
I slowly wiped the blood from my lip and looked directly into his eyes.
Then I smiled.
Not with sadness.
Not with anger.
With absolute certainty.
The expression made Julian hesitate for the first time.
"Our house?" I repeated softly.
I shifted Lily higher into my arms, reached for my phone, and dialed a number from memory.
You won’t believe what happened next…
