Part 3: The Broken Balance

The luxury penthouse grew suffocatingly quiet, the distant sound of traffic outside the glass walls feeling miles away.

Julian dropped his phone onto the dark hardwood floor, the glass screen cracking across the center.

"Emma, please," he said, taking a slow, trembling step toward me, his arrogant tone completely gone. "We can fix this. We can talk about this without the lawyers."

"We tried talking, Julian," I said, tightening my grip around Chloe, who had finally stopped crying to watch her father's empire fall. "But you preferred to use your fists."

The elevator at the end of the hallway suddenly chimed.

The doors slid open, and Detective Miller stepped into the foyer, flanked by two uniformed officers and my defense attorney, Marcus Bell.

Marcus carried a leather-bound portfolio bearing the city's master registry stamp.

"Julian Cross," Detective Miller announced, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, asset dissipation, and domestic assault."

Vanessa Vance, the woman Julian had been paying for with our joint accounts, walked out from the shadow of the elevator doors behind the police.

She wasn't wearing her usual designer clothing. She looked pale, her hair messy, her eyes wide with fear as she looked at me.

"I didn't know about the forgery, Emma!" Vanessa cried out, her voice cracking. "He told me the money was completely clean! He said the trust belonged to him!"

"You knew exactly whose robe you were wearing in that penthouse downtown, Vanessa," I said, looking at her without an ounce of pity.

The officers closed in on Julian, forcing his hands behind his back as the heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut in the quiet room.
