Chapter 2 - The Fall of Holloway Capital

The encrypted transmission Mara sent from her cracked phone didn't travel to a local emergency dispatcher. It routed directly through a private server facility in Zurich before descending upon the primary servers of the New York Stock Exchange and the automated clearing networks of three international private equity banks.
Downstairs in the grand ballroom, the jazz quartet was playing a soft arrangement of Gershwin.
Adrian stood near the top of the marble staircase, smoothing down the lapels of his custom tuxedo jacket, adjusting his cuffs with the calm air of a man who believed the entire state of Connecticut was his personal kingdom.
Vanessa stood beside him, her silk robe discarded in favor of her shimmering cocktail dress, a fresh glass of vintage Dom Pérignon resting between her manicured fingers.
"You should have left her on the carpet, Adrian," Vanessa whispered, leaning close enough so her perfume brushed against his neck. "She’s going to ruin the aesthetic if she tries to crawl down the stairs during the keynote speech."
"She won't crawl anywhere," Adrian smirked, running a hand through his dark hair. "She knows her place. She knows that without my name on those company documents, she’s just an unemployed heiress living off my hospitality."
He raised his glass toward the crowd below.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" Adrian’s voice boomed across the two-story foyer, carrying over the hum of fifty high-net-worth investors, venture capital founders, and state senators.
The room fell silent. Glasses were raised. Heads turned upward toward the grand balcony.
"Tonight, we celebrate not just another record-breaking quarter for Holloway Capital," Adrian announced, his charming, billion-dollar smile flashing under the crystal chandeliers. "Tonight, we announce our acquisition of the regional energy transport grid—a fifty-million-dollar expansion funded by our primary credit lines!"
A polite wave of applause rippled through the ballroom.
Then, every phone in the room buzzed at once.
Not a single phone. Not a quiet chime.
Fifty high-end devices chimed, vibrated, and flashed simultaneously.
Adrian paused, his hand hovering mid-toast as he frowned at his pocket. His personal phone let out a continuous, high-pitched emergency warning tone—the specific alert code reserved for an immediate liquidation event.
He pulled the phone out, his smile fading as his eyes locked onto the screen.

The glass of champagne in Adrian’s hand slipped.
It struck the marble stairs with a loud, crystalline crash, sending sparkling wine and shattered glass spraying across the feet of the state senator standing below.
