Chapter 5 - Unmasking Vanessa’s Scheme

Down in the driveway, under the flashing red lights of three ambulance units and state police cruisers, the party guests were being guided toward their luxury vehicles by private security officers.
Vanessa rushed down the front steps, carrying her designer leather handbag, trying desperately to reach her sports car parked near the fountain.
"Miss Cole!" Evelyn Vance’s voice called out from the porch.
Two female state troopers stepped into Vanessa's path, blocking her from opening her driver's side door.
"What do you want?" Vanessa shrieked, her manicured fingers gripping her purse strap tightly. "I'm an employee! I have nothing to do with Holloway Capital's debt agreements!"
"You have everything to do with the secondary corporate fraud investigation, Miss Cole," Evelyn stated smoothly, pulling up a series of bank statements on her tablet.
"Over the last fourteen months, while Mara was recovering from her second miscarriage, you authorized thirty-eight separate corporate wire transfers from the employee healthcare fund into a private account registered in the Cayman Islands."
"Total value: three point four million dollars."
Vanessa dropped her handbag onto the wet gravel, her face turning an ashen shade of grey as the female troopers stepped forward, clicking a pair of steel handcuffs around her wrists.
"Adrian signed those transfers!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing against the officers' grip as she was guided toward the back of a police cruiser. "He told me no one would ever audit the secondary accounts! He promised me we'd move to Europe after the babies were born!"
Adrian, who was being escorted down the steps in handcuffs by two secondary officers for domestic endangerment and corporate fraud, froze on the gravel path.

He looked at Vanessa, then at the police cruiser, realizing that the woman he had brought into his home had been systematically robbing him while he was busy abusing his wife.
The entire facade of his sophisticated, high-society life had completely dissolved in less than ninety minutes, leaving behind nothing but an empty shell of greed and criminal indictment.
