Chapter 4 - The Audit of Broken Dreams

Upstairs in the quiet bedroom, the paramedics moved with practiced, gentle speed.
Mara lay on the specialized transport gurney, her hands cradling her belly as the lead paramedic checked the fetal heart monitors attached to her abdomen.
Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.
The steady, rhythmic sound of two small, strong hearts filled the quiet bedroom.
Mara let out a long, shuddering breath, tears finally spilling down her pale cheeks—not tears of pain or fear, but tears of pure, overwhelming relief.
"The babies are stable, Mrs. St. Claire," the paramedic reassured her softly, wrapping a warm thermal blanket over her shoulders. "The heartbeats are strong. We're transporting you directly to the specialized maternal-fetal unit at Mount Sinai."
"Thank you," Mara whispered, holding her hand over her stomach.
As the paramedics guided the gurney out of the bedroom into the hallway, Adrian stood by the door, surrounded by two state troopers who blocked him from stepping any closer.
His custom tuxedo was disheveled, his collar unbuttoned, his face a hollow mask of total ruin.
"Mara!" Adrian begged, his voice cracking into a pathetic, desperate whine as he tried to reach past the officer's arm. "Mara, please! Listen to me! It was a mistake! Vanessa meant nothing to me! I was stressed about the company!"
Mara didn't look down. She didn't look at his hands, and she didn't look at his tears.
She lay on the gurney, her posture straight, her eyes fixed on the ceiling as her voice carried softly through the hallway.
"The company was never yours, Adrian," Mara said quietly.
"My father built those credit lines twenty years ago."
"I gave you five years to prove that you loved me for who I was, rather than what my name could buy you."
"And you spent those five years dragging me across the floor so your assistant could laugh."
Vanessa stood in the corner of the landing, trying frantically to hide her face from the party guests below who were recording every second of the disaster on their smartphones.

Evelyn Vance stepped beside Mara's gurney, handing her a digital tablet carrying the live corporate filing confirmations.
"The board of directors has officially convened via emergency conference call, Mara," Evelyn reported. "Adrian Holloway has been stripped of every executive title, his corporate credit cards have been cancelled, and the local sheriff’s department is currently arriving at the gate."
